Default 944 nose bearing alignment

I'm rebuilding a 1989 944 and am having difficulty aligning the front one-piece main crankshaft bearing with the crankcase alignment pin.

The bearing fits snuggly enough into the crankcase seat so that, while lowering the crankshaft, I can't move the bearing to feel it engage the pin.

I thought I had it seated properly on my first reseating attempt but, after noting that the crankshaft was not rotating freely enough, found I was off slightly and the pin bit into the edge of the mating hole in the bearing. This deformed the bearing which pressed on the crank which resulted in tough-turning. Nuts. Have a new $250 set of bearings and don't want to ruin another set.

Any suggestions on how to align the bearing to the pin during reseating of the crankshaft?

Thanks!
