Default Idea for Modified Phone Dials (on the cheap) - Pictures

I had an idea in class today (always daydreaming about the 951 ). So I went ahead and mocked it up. I'm not an artist, and I only used MS paint for this. But alas, here is the mock-up. The idea is to use 10 matte-black stickers (or choose your color) on each wheel to give the effect as seen below.

I know stickers are cheapo, but they can always be removed. And they might look good if the quality is premier. Such as a matte-black with a rubber-like feel.

Has anyone seen this idea before? Thoughts? Opinions? Ideas?
Please discuss.

(btw this is my 951 )

Why not get 968 wheels? Looks pretty much the same.

You want to put stickers on your wheels? Wouldn't that be kind of embarrassing.. like up close?

Reminds me of those fake disc rotors that go over drum brakes

I'm afraid your idea ranks right down there with the Turbonator...

I dunno, I kinda dig it. You say why not get 968 wheels? The whole point is that this costs a couple bucks...

Get some black duct tape, or electrical tape, or something, and throw it on there and see how it looks... Hell, I might even try it tomorrow ;P

Not that I support purely cosmetic mods, but I wouldn't use stickers, I'd buy a cut of black vinyl decal and trim all the pieces you want out of it. I used this type of vinyl to make sun visor strips on the tops of my windshields.

It's definitely cheap, and it might look cheap. We just won't know until someone tries it and posts pics. It's not really a sticker, I guess. It's more of a decal, like FRporscheman said. People put decals on their 944s all the time. "Turbo" decals, "Carrera" decals, Porsche emblems, and more. What if the decal had the Porsche script written on it in light grey?

I'm in agreement with all the comments about it being tacky, but it might be kind of cool (might). It's all about craftsmanship and quality. I will say though that it's not like fake disc rotors or over-sized spoilers. This is just an idea and I wanted to offer it up. I bet it will, in fact, look good from a distance...at least.

It only costs a couple bucks and it's reversible. Butters944, post some pics if you give it a shot!
Or if someone has the motivation to photoshop, that would be fun to see.

I would use black vinyl and try to cut it exactly or mask it and powdercoat the spoke edges matte black

go for it--do a tape mockup and if you like it, paint 'em like Dan just said. I've seen some pretty cool results with a set of hubcaps like what you're proposing (from another broke student!)

it's not like your phone dials belong in the Louvre.

I agree in that if you think you would like it give it a shot. They are phone dial wheels, not holy relics. Sounds like a good way to spend tomorrow afternoon, keep us posted.

^ I agree. It's at least worth giving it a shot.

I won't get to see my car until thanksgiving so I'm really hoping someone else will give it a try on a wheel or two. Or even just half a wheel.

I'm betting if it's done properly (key word here), that it would actually look decent -- maybe even unique in a good way. It would be awesome to have the porsche script or mini black & white Porsche logo on some or all of the blackened areas.

Just don't make it look crappy, and it could very well pass for a respectful improvement!
