Unhappy Crank Bolt Back Out While Driving

Hey guys I had something scary happen... I was driving my car and right when I was cutting it off I hear this on grinding, clunkish sound...

Apparently my crank bolt backed out... I dunno how but that sucker did, luckly since I didn't have my covers on all my belts held the gear from what I can tell it doesn't look like timing skipped but I will confirm. Sadly though I have no oil pressure and I heard a loud sound similar to a diesel truck coming from the cam tower near the fourth cylinder.

Ideas?

I think my crank gear isn't all the way back I hear this can cause low/no oil pressure since the crank bolt isn't all the way down. Looks like I'm gonna have to check the timing and redo my belts and install the crank... That bolt is getting loctite

I think the noise is from the lifters lacking oil but I'm not sure... The sound is coming right from the cam cover. Possible Cam Gasket went?

Wait until you've got the bolt back in and have oil pressure before trying to diagnose the noisy valve train... it's gonna make a bunch of noise if you have no oil pressure, and you are running the risk of doing serious damage.

Did you have a flywheel lock on it when you tightened up the bolt? so long as you got it to 155ft-lbs it shouldn't back out.

The oil pump needs all of the pulleys and the bolt tight to make pressure, if they are not on all the way the sleeve doesn't seat enough to work. Pull the car apart and take some scotchbright to the nose of the crankshaft and the inside of the timing belt pulley, and the balance belt pulley and clean up the surfaces. If they are nasty they won't go on all the way.

If your making no oil pressure its not suprising your lifters are noisy. Get it fixed right and then see. They will quiet down. The cam tower gasket will cause a leak onto your header, not a ticking lifter. I did it 3 times on my 8v motor and it was always a smoking mess, but not a ticking lifter.

Ok guys found out the Timing is fine the car didn't jump time at all, the marks line up perfectly for the cam belt. I looked at the crank gear and it is indeed slid forward I can see some purple o-ring and it appears to be forward about .25-.5 inch. So the car will be jack up and I will redo the belts and correctly place the crank gear. I see no signs of oil leaks, the oil behind the cam tower is old from what I can tell. So I am betting the crank bolt and gear is a possible cause of no oil pressure.

I found out the person who helped me put anti-seize on the crank bolt and that is probable cause of it backing out.

Don't put anything on the crank bolt - no anti-seize, no loctite. Just clean it up good, install it dry, and torque it good and tight with a flywheel lock installed.

If that o-ring is brittle/hard replace it, otherwise you'll have to take it apart again :P

Anti-seize is probably the worst possible thing you could use lol, he owes you a 6-pack, minimum for that. The crank bolt isn't that hard to break loose

Ok guys I got the gear's pressed firmly against the shaft. I was wondering how much space is there between the timing gear on the crank shaft and the oil pump? Should it be flush or just really close? I think I have 1mm of space and I can't seem to push it closer up. I've been tapping it gently with a hammer. Also for the crank bolt washer, the cone side faces the radiator right? Or does it face towards the oil pump?

Ok guys I've reinstalled everything and started driving late last night. Car seems fine the noise went away after about 5min, so it must have been some dry lifters (though it sounded like a knock to me at the time). Oil pressure is at 5 and car runs good.

You mean the soft lines that go directly to the rail? I replaced the damper line, but those will be next

After that I would check tq on the tensioners and rollers. IMHO anti-seize has nothing to do with the bolt backing out. I was without doubt not torqued to spec.
