Question 944 T STRANGE ENGINE NUMBERS

On the pad at the back of my engine block (just ahead of the crank position sensor) where earlier cars have their model and serial numbers, mine has a large stamping that reads..."R DOT" Between the R and the D is a triangle with the stylized letters "VD" inside. I've seen this marking before and I assume it's a Porsche werks vendor's TM. But then on the deck of the block, at the back of the head, "M44 HC" is stamped into the block in normal sized letters. No other numbers. Could this be a factory warranty replacement engine or a crate engine? I'd rather hear that it's some rare prototype that Porsche will pay tens of thousands to get back!!! Any ideas?

R-DOT on anything Prosche means it is a non factory fitted part, ie: OEM aftermarket.

When the DOT required VIN stickers on high value parts of the car, the manufacturers were required to apply "R DOT" stickers to their replacement parts. On our cars, for example, this includes the front fenders, both bumper covers, doors, and the engine block. These stickers are only on manufacturer's replacement parts, not aftermarket parts. In fact, Porsche's stickers are covered with a "peel off" to allow painting without masking and then uncover the replacement sticker. The triangle logo is Porsche's trademark--many of our parts are marked with this, doesn't matter the original maker of the part, as long as it's a factory part.
So, I think the engine is a replacement from the factory. I have a factory long block and it also has no engine serial number but is marked "M44 HB" at that spot.
Hope this helps.
