Default Engine running hot? but normal temp on gauge?

Ok, I may be crazy, but my car seems to be running really hot. I can barely touch the hood. The temp gauge seems to work right, fans come on, I assume the thermostat pops or else I would have wrecked the motor by now. Am I the only one who's thought this? Other engines on other cars I have or had don't seem this bad. I'm starting to worry my temp gauge reads too low. Is this just normal for these cars? I'll admit the head and exhaust is closer to the top of the engine bay than any other car I've owned.

I'm pretty sure that i can touch the hood of my car after driving... You might consider getting an Infrared Temperature Gun and checking your engine temps in various locations.

Something like this...

I have the same thing going on with my 87 Turbo. Temp gauge is fine but when I open the hood after a drive, wow! The car smells hot too.
