The battery gound on top of the bell housing has been cleaned and polished-right? Cover the TDC hole with tape if you decide to clean again so nothing falls in the clutch.

The battery cables on top of the battery are clean and tight?

The cables on the starter are on tight and clean?

The battery is fully charged and load tested if you have the tool?

The car only clicks when you turn the key? Could be a bad or stuck solenoid.

Could be bad brushes in the starter.

Pull the starter and take it to a FLAPS to have it tested.

More,
If you are inclined, you could open up the starter and clean, grease and check the internals:
A diesel starter is pictured but the procedure is the same.

http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthrea...0#post42115781

If you take it to a parts store, solenoids cost about $50, a set of brushes about $40.
A rebuilt starter is a unit that is cleaned and painted. If something is bad it is replaced. Maybe a 90 day to 1 year warranty.

A remanufactured starter---Bosch is best, The unit is taken apart and every part that can wear out is replaced. Warranties vary from 1 year and better.

Sounds like your starter is bad. Try and hit it with a hammer. Sometimes that can free it up and work for a time or 2.

Might be a battery issue too... starters need a lot of amps to crank. If they don't get that much power they will only click.

You might try starting the 944 while jumping it with another car. Or swap the battery with a known good one.

You might just need to replace the battery cables.

Please do not jump the car. You may distroy the DME.

Charge the battery.

If you have any corrosion on the cable end of the negative battery cable-replace.

Must use at least a 4 gage or thicker gage wire----not the cheap 8 or 12 gage off the shelf at WalMart.
