Hood release cable fail- how to open hood?

Belly pan off, from under my car (it has a MAF and no timing covers), I was able to reach up and squeeze it with pliers. Squeeze the retaining screw that holds the end of the cable against the flange that the cable housing end buts against. Don't know if access is possible with the stock air box.
