Default DIY gearbox semi solid mount

Here's what i'm doing right now ,hope to finish it in a couple of hours.
The 8 anti-vibration mounts are new OEM drop links mounts, when new they are a very hard solid rubber.

I cant finish it today ,some neibourhs complained about the noise.
Price was
-22 euro for the 8 drop link rubber mounts
-14,67 euro for the steel plates ,bolts washers and nuts

My welding skils are awfull but for now it turned out good enough.

So far so good. I like it. If I can ask what made you decide to try this now? Alot of noise from the tranny, alot of wiggle in the tranny? Or like me....sometimes you just get bored and want to see what you can improve.

Keep it up, please make sure to post your driving impressions after installation as well.

When i took the gearbox off i was surprised to see how much movement the stock mount allows for, it moves so much it's scary ,at first i thought the mount was broken.
Since quite a few people had very good experiences with semi solit mounts i wanted to try one but the price kept putting me off. Being a simple design i decided to try making one myself also i think that rubber mounts will be a bit better than polyeurethane at absorbing vibration ,at the same time these drop link mounts are made of a very hard rubber so they wont allow for any more movement than the polyeurethane ones do.

a KLA solid mount cut down to size to allow for the rubber mounts would be the next best thing http://www.klaindustries.net/gearboxmnt/gearboxmnt.htm
Too bad they dont make a semi solid ,i would have bought one just for the better looks ,the price is just about right.

I know it looks like **** but it will hold ,the two L shaped center pieces wont allow it to break. For the moment welding is not for me but i will learn eventualy.

^ you sure? Doesn't look like much penetration. Wouldn't be too hard to just go over it again - slowly as to heat it up more than what happened last time.

For $30 you could have just filled the stock mount with poly for the same result, and never have to worry about a questionable weld on your trans mount..

That's a nasty pigeon poo weld. Great thing is you can try again! Think of how much misery it will cause if it breaks...

I have no idea what gear/settings/rod/material you're using... so no serious advice here - but often that type of weld can be from too much power. Back it down a bit, and walk the melt pool in a small zigzag. Second hand advice, but srsly you guyz - this is one area you should get right.

Check out youtube - there are heaps of really good welding tutes. Everything from arc to tig welding inconel tube.

Oh, but, that's not to be negative - this is exactly what we should be doing. Home brew!

You guys are right ,i will reweld it ,the movement of the trans is mostly lateral and all the stress will go into that weld.
For $30 you could have just filled the stock mount with poly for the same result, and never have to worry about a questionable weld on your trans mount..
I wanted to try something different.

Actually i don't blame them ,yesterday was a holiday here and hearing a grinder for an hour would iritate anybody to say the least.

Now that is a great looking trans mount , when mine brakes and i know it will i will definetely buy one of those. In the mean time i want to experiment a little.
