GL4 and GL5 are different. Use GL4 if thats what is called for. As for the cooler, a synthetic might be a good choice because of it's cold-flow ability. You don't want to snap a pump gear/shaft with thick oil.
Synthetic is fine and recommended. I use Amsoil GL4 and can't really complain.
