Where do you buy your oil?

Be aware that since the EPA mandated 100K catalytic converter life, this forced some MAJOR changes in oil chemistries. The oil companies were forced to reduce and/or eliminate the critical EP additives (ZDDP, sulfur and phosphorus) that significantly reduce camshaft, rocker arm, and ring wear since these compounds contaminated and reduced cat life.
We've been seeing a LOT more rocker arm and cam wear issues so now we use some oil additives to replace those all-important EP chemicals that protect these parts.
Do your homework and you'll find some appropriate products for these cars to aleviate these problems.

Basically our cars need zddp additive for the top end and as 944_S_Type said, oil companies have reduced this due to new cat design specs. However, our cats are ok with zddp and if you use a low or zero zddp oil it WILL cause damage to your engine. Tested, proven: http://www.lnengineering.com/oil.html
That link recommends Brad Penn (among others), that have the correct zddp additive for our engines. That company also will send you a sample bottle to test your oil. I have used Brad Penn for a long while and sent samples to them for testing. Results show my engine oil has much less "metallic" content than other engine oils in the same engine that they have tested. I have had no cat issues and my followers have minimum noise, just a 1/2 sec tap-tap when cold then nothing.
Just my experience, you make your own choices.

walmart and Mobil one 0w40~15w50. 25 bucks for 5 quarts? = you betcha... exotic oils (ayee, these overbought, cheap 944 accessories
) just aren't necessary for your $1,200 engines..... i run all Mobil 1 0w40 after september and i've changed from 10w40/15w50 mix for summer to their new 5w50 mixed w/15w50.... a good synthetic like Mobil 1 extended performance 10w40 is good for 25 k miles and is actually guarenteed to work perfect for 15 k... therefore dump it in and drive the car like you stole it, and change the filter at 6,000~6,500 miles and finally the oil around 10~12 k miles.... the only reason not to go too far past that point is that the oil eventually becomes contaminated after 15~20 k and can wear on the rod bearings.

I use Brad Penn 20W-50 as well...
While I don't neccesarily disagree with the above statement, for something like oil that most of us change a couple times a year, at best - why not spend an extra $15 per change for high quality oil? Seems like a no-brainer to me...

so consensus is Brad Penn or ZR1 20w50, best place to buy varies on location. Gotcha. Thanks everyone. Sorry to start another oil thread! My main question was the best place to buy it. aka online or local auto parts store, straight from dealer, etc.

I live in Austin, TX - don't know of a place that carries Penn Oil...so I have to buy online.
I buy a couple cases for about $5.50 a quart after shipping from here: http://theoilwarehouse.com/?mainURL=...acing_Oil.html
