Default can i convert a NA 944 to a turbo?

Well lets start with my 1983 944 NA. so far 90% stock just a few mods like a web race cam lindsey racing fuel rail and aem fuel presure regulator. I've been wanting to turbo this car for some time and even i know, unless i can adjust fuel curves the stock computer just wont work.

So far options are slim to none!! I've been watching ebay and there are several PORSCHE 944 TURBO ENGINE WIRING HARNESS up for sale as well as the stock turbo computers. All in all my official ? is if i were to buy one of these wireing harnesses and computers, Would it all plug in??

If not then a stand alone EMS is my only option other than selling and buying a factory turbo car. If anyone has attempted this or just knows more about it than me i'd appreciate any advice and technical know how, Thank You.....

The electrical systems on the 85.5 and later cars are not the same as on the early cars. You would not be able to just plug the computers and harness in.

Unless you got the 951 for a REALLY good deal, like almost free, it would not be worth the time / blood / tears it would take to convert. I know you don't want to hear this but the truth hurts sometimes.

That being said good luck and if you give it a shot I will be watching.

Read his second paragraph. The OP is asking if the computer and harness will plug in.
The easy answer is, no it won't.

If the OP had a late 944 then it would be fairly easy to make the changes. There are significant differences between an early and late 944.

not much should need to be done to the body harness, mostly the engine harness side.

it can be made to work, as its been done before.

it will be alot of work, but dont let the naysayers discourage you. go through with it, but dont cut corners or it will end up a mess.

Well thank you for all your reply's. It sounds like i thought not as easy as it looks, im sure it could be done if the right steps were taken but the headache that would come with it...... well, not sure i want it. I've been looking at AEM's EMS-4 UNIVERSAL STANDALONE ENGINE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM.......With this I could just do away with all the factory junk and start new. Still not sure what im going to do but either way i do like a challenge!!

no reason to go standalone unless youre making a serious monster or racecar. the standard system is more than capable.

+1 on a stock configuration to start. By the time you end up chasing down all the electrical challenges, you'll be glad you kept it pretty much standard. Most of the stuff is the same between the 8 valve engines except the turbo parts obviously:

DME/KLR + harness + injectors + turbo coolant sensor, etc.
It's probably smarter to put in the lower compression (8:1) pistons from the actual turbo instead of using the (11:1?) NA pistons. Otherwise, unless you change the headgasket, you'll destroy it.

Honestly, if you're gonna go this route, you may as well rebuild the whole damn engine to make sure everything is up to par before pushing it any further.

Arock,

What did you think of the Web cam?

I'm looking at doing this and would like some feedback from those who have.

Thanks

Hi cochezz, so far the cam seems to work just fine idle is smooth and acceleration is a little better than before. I think a person would see better results on a turbo though, especially for what it cost.
