Default 6 cylinder 944, eh?

http://www.voltagevehicles.com/Vehic...5226&zip=95439

How hard is it.... it only takes the dimmest of wit to count the number of silver tube things on top of the engine, or the number of spark plugs, or to just look at the length of the engine and know no 6cyl could be that short. Then there's always the name of the car having a couple of "4"s in it (nah, that can't be suggesting anything). I mean, if you don't know anything about engines, that's totally fine, just don't say anything (wrong) about the engine!

Maybe he's counting the master and slave cylinders?

Nice car though, I hope he gets close to asking.

That guy on here who's transplanting a VR6 into his 944 said it was actually shorter iirc.

..... I KNEW someone would bring up the VR6.... the only 6 cylinder that's smaller than our 4.... lol.

Yeah, I've seen that thread, I was actually considering the same swap when he started but decided against it in the end. Yes, it's smaller in height, and I think length too.

I suppose quite many 6-cylinder engine is about as long as 944 engine is. At least Audi 5-cylinder base engine is about 10-15cm shorter than 944 engines are.
Have been looking Audi engine at friends works shop, and every time small dimensions brings smile on my face. 944 4-cylinder is just huge what comes to the dimensions. I would like to see some day for example BMW 6-cylinders S-series engine with over 300hp under 944 hood.

Olli, I completely agree! I'm not a big fan of BMW cars, but I love those 6-cylinder engines.

I saw that thread on the turbo board a few years ago about a guy putting an Audi 20vt into his 951. Those engines are awesome. I actually don't know which swap I'd be more excited about! But I think either way, I'd like it more than the 951 engine or even 968 engine.

It's funny when you talk to someone about a 5-cylinder engine (like my mercedes turbodiesel) and they say "hold on, FIVE???" Haha, yes, five, why not five?

Are you nuts?! I have one such engine, it drives my 300td, and I'd swap in any gasoline engine in a second. If I had an unlimited budget, I'd love to keep this engine, rebuild it, mod it, and put down 400tq and 300hp. But I've looked into the rebuild costs, and it's baaad. Swapping in a 560SEL engine would be cheaper. Even a SBC conversion would be cheaper!

I don't think it would fit in the 944 - it's too tall.

Why do you like the MB turbodiesel?

Wait wait wait wait, WHAAAAAAAT???? Not only does it say a 6 cyl, but if you look in the dealer comments tab, "call for details!! Mention internet advertisement to receive this price. 100% Electric!! Only pennies a day to drive! Stop global warming!" It's an electric car? That picture of the engine shuuure looks like the standard NA engine...

S14 would be quite good alternative if we are talking about motor swaps. Only negative side is the price tag. S14 engines are priced higher than 951 or 968 engines. Have almost one S14 in my warehouse. Have been collecting parts for years, just some smaller items are missing. Plan is to install S14 under my E30 318I with M40 engine, which was never imported to USA. US version of 318I was a 4-door with M42 like 2-dr 318IS.
I can easily measure engine bay dimensions, have both E30 & 951 in my yard. At least under E30 hood all S-series engines fit without any cutting, even V8 from M3/5.
At least Toyota Supra 6-cylinder fits, i suppose BMW S-series engine is not much longer ?
A friend of mine is developing a kit for 944's which allow to drop Audi 5-cyl directly under 944 hood.Kit will include for example a casted bellhousing, which can be bolted directly between Audi engine & 944 torque tube, so no adpaters etc. will be needed.

Olli, I would be interested in buying one of those kits.

Rob, too bad the BMW 6 won't fit. There are lots of engines out there that would fit, most of them 4 cylinders, that I just see no benefit in using instead of a 944/968 engine. An S14 would be fun, but really, is it worth the trouble and expense? I know I could take this thought one step further and say "just use a chevy v8" but I have reasons for not liking that route. Everyone else does it, it's not German, and I think the sound doesn't match the car.

Spencer, I've actually been researching oil coolers today, and I'd love to hear more about your benz cooler, and see pics if you have some. I just saw a 944t cooler for the first time today (on our track car) and dang, it's tiny. I thought it was the same as a 968 cooler but it's smaller. Those benz ones are big!

Butters, HAHA, so not only did he get the number of cylinders wrong, but the car doesn't even have cylinders at all? So is that an old engine bay shot? Or maybe he thinks the 944 engine is a 6-cylinder electric motor.
