Default Rubber Clutch

I recently pulled the motor out of the 85 I picked up recently as a bearing had seized.

Took the clutch off the old motor with every intention of putting a new disc on the new motor.

The rubber clutch seems to be in great condition though. There are absolutely no cracks in the rubber and it looks great.

As always the less money spent the better but would it be eternally stupid to reuse this clutch with the new motor.

I Wouldn't and Couldn't recommend re-using it..; unless of course you love removing the engine, or dropping the tranny...

Before I replaced mine, the Car was shifting Really Bad for some reason,,...

Just update it. The clutch is already out and the motor is pulled. Its definitely worth replacing with fresh new parts so you don't have to pull the motor and do the work again. "do it once, do it right, don't do it again."

Just in case you still have any doubt, yes replace it.

I have one hanging on my wall, it's in great condition as well, and I wouldn't even let someone I didn't like use it.

Hi gricec, If you plan on junking the rubber centered clutch, I'd like to get it from you. I have an 83 944 with an autotrans and can use it on. I bought the car with #2 rod through the block so have to R&R the engine anyway. Much easier for us to take it out the top. Please send a PM on shipping cost.

Cheers,
Larry

I put in a new rubber cnetered clutch disk 15 years ago, one track day and it shattered the rubber. Disk surface was only worn .2MM. They get old and shatter.

Go ahead and re-use the old one. We'll look forward to the thread about how you wish had simply replaced it when you had the chance......

All together now... in your best Mr. T voice... "I pity the fool who'd reuse a rubber-center clutch."

Replace it with a spring-center one, and you likely won't have to change it for as long as you own the car.
