Default starting issue- fuel related?

Hey guys, i got an '89 944 2.7 a month or so ago and it is hesitant to start, it seems to be getting spark just fine and all that, but it just wont fire. a quick spritz of starting fluid in the airbox has it firing up immeadietly, and once running it runs, idles, and drives fine. Occasionally, holding the throttle all the way open will get it to start, but that is a rare occurance. I'm suspecting a bad fuel filter maybe? i'm new to these cars however so i figured i'd consult some experts before throwing money at it if this is a known issue.

i havent checked the fuel pressure, but after some reading last night it seems as though my symptoms are similar to those of a bad dme relay? although my car runs just fine once started, its just very hard to get started. i'll check the fuel pressure this week

could be the dme relay, and for the small cost just buy one and try that. if its still doing it ... youll have a spare which is a good idea anyway . after that id look into the FPR. similar symptons

Another possibility (this was the problem in my case) is leaky flexible fuel lines that connect to the fuel rail. I could smell gas in the garage in the morning, and the car would be hard to start. But it would start fine if it wasn't sitting idle all night, because it took a long time for the fuel pressure to be lost. Not exactly the same symptoms as your car, though.
