LOL...The big bites hurt also but the 1000 cuts are always lurking in the wings with these cars

us water cooled guys are like range rover owners...never get the picture completely. Glutuns for punishment. Any aircooled car with a 40k motor can be a bulletproof track/road car for decades without anything. Hell, an average SC with a modest engine and chassis will put a lot of distance between itself and any 944 based car both on the track and on the wallet. A 911 is not expensive to make fast...they are a pretty good package to start with.

I know this is true too.

But today I saw the classic 911 back off the track during the Pirelli Challenge Race at Mid Ohio. I think the team has not long been switched to the 911.

The driver came tearing in to the corner and then the back end swapped and lead him right off the track and airborne into the tires and the retaining fence. I have never seen a more classic 911 crash in slow motion.

I know it is not the cars fault and other things could have gone wrong to make this happen. But it is ONE big reason why I became a glutton when I was thinking of racing in the Porsche.

the biggest improvement a 911 owner can make for speed is driving lessons...they are incredible when handled right. the old ones with ~200hp are still faster than many sportscars today in capable hands...power to the road

I always thought that the 944 was over engineered.
OK now, this made me laugh.

whoever thought up the:
wiring harness
87+ belt tensioner
heater core hoses
reference sensors BEHIND the engine

needs to be stabbed repeatedly with a rusty screwdriver

and if you are one of those people who think the 87+ belt tensioner was a good idea...this screwdriver's coming for you

Default total brain meltdown....

i ran my '87 944 98 thousand miles from 17 k miles on the clock to 115 k miles between 1990 and 1994 without doing anything to it but changing the oil and a fan relay. outside of that, not so much as a fan belt changed. i got into a period of extended overtime and kept forgetting to check the oil..... i kept saying to myself.... "aw, i'll do it on the next fill-up." only to keep forgetting. a slow oil leak and failure of normal brain activity doomed the car when i decided i'd drive from austin to midland at 120 mph ++ on I-10.

My favorite Porsche 944 engineering wonder is the alleged oil cooler placed under the exhaust manifold in the early cars and its potentially catastrophic consequences.

it has a heat shield though, it most definitely does cool the oil off

and all years can suffer from the consequences, 944/951/S2/968, the oil and coolant are separated by not more than 2 o-rings...

Here's an idea that's worked for me.
