Default 1990 S2 maintenance list (preventative list too), what and where to get?

I'm trying to learn about this car and what is recommended/needed as far as maintenance and preventative maintenance. Assuming that the only maintenance on the car is the usual tune up (oil, air filter, spark plugs), what else would be needed?

The car is a 1990 S2 with about 65k miles.

I've read about the chain pad tensioner but can't find it on Pelican and I'm unsure what other parts I'll need with it?
I'm also wondering about the timing belt/water pump...

So far I've only found a "tune up kit" on Pelican, so if anyone can recommend other things I should change I'd appreciate it. If you can add a link to the exact part(s) that would be very helpful.

Thanks in advance for any help given.

Look at the owners manual for scheduled Maintenance items.
Change the water pump with the two Belts, and a roller kit.
Change the cam tensioner assembly, or at least the pads.
Do a search on rear transaxle fluid change.
Check your Clutch thickness.
Take a look at clarksgarage.com for service/repair advise.

+1 on all the engine/drivetrain maintenance listed above. Visual inspection might give clues. But lacking documentation on when these were last performed, it's all reasonable insurance and peace of mind.
If you haven't already heard, these 944 engines are "interference" type, meaning the valves when open dip into the piston displacement volume. A broken timing belt or cam chain would almost definitely allow a piston to bash against an extended open valve, and disaster ensues.
Have you located the S2 air filter yet? Replacing that without guidance is sort of a "test". As clues, let me say it takes removing at least 12 fasteners, two insulation strips (in headlight compartments), and a small body panel.
Have fun - I enjoy my S2 immensely both street and track.

What everyone said....plus, in general you are dealing with a 21yr old car. Keep in mind that all things rubber and plastic may be getting brittle right about now.

Things I have replaced:

AFM (just got it back from ROCS yesterday)
ABS pump and brain
Clutch ($)
Rotors
Shocks & struts
Waterpump
Alternator
AC compressor
O2 sensor
window switches
Wheel bearings
Dash lights
Valve cover gasket
Trans 1/2 shafts
Etc

Hi,

don't miss:

as DIY video for the service of a S2. And

as tutorial how to replace all belts and shaft seals.

Both videos have English subtitles. Use the cc-button of YouTube. If you cannot see the titles check your browser setup.

Best regards,

Jürgen

Thanks for the info guys.

I haven't purchased the car yet but I'm almost certain I will by this weekend (seller is out until then). I just wanted to know what I was getting into beforehand.

I'm a DIY'er so I'll be doing most of the work myself but will leave the harder stuff to the pros! However, having those tutorial videos really make things seem less difficult. Great job on those.

65K is good (low) mileage but you might as well add in:

- master-slave hose for clutch (easy replacement but will leave you stranded if it fails...out of 3 cars - one split at 12 years, amazed the other two hadn't failed when I saw their condition during replacement)

- fuel lines (pretty pricey but, unfortunately, you won't have to see too many 944 fire videos on YouTube to be convinced about this one )

- O-ring replacement on oil pressure relief valve (this is a painful job but search milkshake if you have any questions about its importance)

- fuel injector clean/rebuild ($15-$20 each x4 for professional service)

- might check the motor mounts although the low mileage should be in your favor on this one

- transaxle mount is another possibility and easy to check for "swinging pair" syndrome (the urethane procedure described here on Rennlist was just applied to an S2 in the family with very good results)
