944 belt noise?

Hi all,
Been following posts but haven't posted in a while. Had a little girl 7 weeks ago, our first, and my wrenching time with the pcar has been alittle more scarce (one could say I've traded my chamois fora diaper rag, although I've already called dibs on some of the hemp diaper cloths when she no longer needs them, they are way softer than my microfibers
).
Anyway, I have a question for the 944 community about what I think is either some belt noise or a stiff roller, and the significance of same. The sound (excuse the description) is like a "whee -tee-whee... whee-tee-whee" and is present from cold start until the engine has run at operating temp for about 5-10 mins. (hope video works)..
My mechanic (german with bmw racing background) said it is common to have some belt noise in some of these cars, but I miss the beautiful sound of the engine since replacing what I recall was all belts, rollers and the h2o pump about 4 months and 10km ago. It's been my DD since with a 100km round-trip 3-4 days/wk on mountain hwy and what a pleasure it's been.
So, are belt noises common in your experience with the 944/951, and is it something that is worthwhile pulling covers and inspecting further?
Thx a million for all your past & future help,
Cory http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AkPzUQTCN4&feature=youtube_gdata_player

I can't tell what that sound is from the video, but I don't think it's common. You can try spraying water onto your PS and AC/ALT belts while it's running, and if the noise stops, you know either they are loose, or maybe damaged, glazed, etc.
You can also try the long-screwdriver-stethoscope held to your ear and probe around the engine to see if you can isolate the noise. Obviously only probe stationary parts. Try the water pump, upper BS front cover, exhaust manifold, everywhere until you hear it loudest. You could also take off the belt covers and run the engine, so you can probe the rollers' studs to see if one of them is squeaking, but that's more work.

Could also be water pump. These can make noise before they fail. Long screw driver to the ear is the best way to isolate which part of the engine is making the noise. You will need to pull the belt covers and put back on some of intake track to get the car to run an access the rollers.

i had the same noise from the belts on my 85. i replaced both the serpentine and the V-belt and the noise was no more. i inspected both belts and found some glazing.
