The nice part about these cars (both in Safety and Performance) is that they are very rigid. The Frame, the Doors, and the Roof are all very structural.

Also, The Engine (Front of the Car) and the Transmission (Back of the Car) are connected as one Solid piece (via the torque tube) and the Torque Tube has hooks that attach to the Torsion Bar Housing. So really getting Crushed would be almost impossible!

Now people will argue that without crumple zones like modern car you will suffer extreme whip lash in a hard accident. But the seats are designed to hold your body and head in place.

I have an 87' 944na with no air bags; I wear my seat belt all the time, and feel very safe. I really believe that Offense is your best Defense when it comes to avoiding accidents... I drive faster and more aggressively than most drivers, but i pay way more attention than most drivers, and drive a car that can perform in aggressive situations;

I have been pulled over 20+ times in my 13 years of driving, but I have never been in an accident...

Is the 944 a safe car? Hell Yea! I would like to find crash test videos, but have had no luck... In closing, these cars are really just too good looking to crash, so please don't!

The 944 will fare well in most frontal or rear crash situations, it does crumple some like most unibodies will. Side impacts... well pray to god they don't hit you very hard. I don't feel like the doors would do all that well vs an SUV due to the height of the bumpers vs how low the car is. My 88 944s has dual airbags, im a bit leary of them being a first gen airbag, im really considering disabling them.

Always nice to hear the car is a solid structure. I had a civic for a while and I thought if someone sneezed at me the car would go 'poof' in the air... no what I mean? So good to hear. Awful to see the linked thread though.

My wife wanted to know how safe these cars were. I think she has been convinced! So, looks like I am off and running looking for a 86+ 944. Trying to spend as little as possible while getting a good car.

Make sure you have some money left over, pretty much any cheap 944 you find will need some $$ invested pretty quick. I'd budget around 600 to 1k if you can. Please tell me you can work on it yourself, that will save you a ton on it.

Thanks arominus. I do have a bit bigger than budgeted. Looking to spend no more than 3k...
I can and am willing to do some of the easier stuff myself, as I am lacking a garage anything longer than a day gets a bit hard.

I would bet that many of them are rear ended. And as was said elsewhere here that another big Porsche eater is high speed one driver get offs.


It is obvious that you dont run a 944 off the road running 10/10ths at at redline.

Also, you dont want to let a truck T bone you in the door. Use that Porsche motor, brakes, or steering and avoid that at almost any cost.

Obviously it is obvious . I bet in most situations you will be fine though.

With these cars, the best way to spend as little as possible is to spend as much as you can.

After you own one for 2 years it will make perfect sence.
