sunroof dilema
i have an early 85 944 and i've run into an issue with the sunroof. if i depress the witch to open the sunroof nothing happens. no noise from the motor, no relay click, nothing. if i depress the switch to close the roof i can hear the motor spinning but the sunroof does not move. the sunroof is currently closed which is all the better anyways. just wondering where i should start with this issue. i did notice two brown relays near the sunroof motor. not sure if one is used for opening the roof and the other for closing.. not really sure where to start.

i'm not sure if any gears are stripped as the sunroof motor does work. the issue is that nothing operates when i depress the switch to open the sunroof.

clarks-garage has an excellent troubleshooting guide.
IMO, you have a switch problem and/or microswitch problem. It can't hurt to pop open the sunroof switch and clean it. Then use Clark's guide to check your microswitches. A microswitch is like a sensor, when the sunroof is closed all the way it should trip one of these switches and cut power to the motor (in the downward direction), so maybe that switch isn't being tripped. Likewise, maybe your switch for sunroof-open is stuck and cutting power to the motor (in the upward direction). Just theories; check clarks-garage.

That's not how it works, you can't tell if the gears are ok because the motor works. The motor in is the driver rear fender, remove your carpet and you'll find your cable all tangled up in the there I'm sure. Follow the posted clarks garage procedure to the letter and you'll figure it out. I did many times.

Nothing like 43 moving parts to raise and lower the roof just 1"...Go with a manual SR conversion and never look back. The SR on these cars is a ridiculously over engineered design destined for failure from the start.

do you have a link for a writeup on going with a manual roof?

I can't seem to find the link (Sid Viscous?) but do a search on 'manual sunroof', any date, on the 944/951 forums and you will find all you need to know. I can do a conversion in about 1/2 hour and have done a few cars so far. It's stupid easy if that matters.

I have a manual sunroof setup for sale, and I can walk you through the whole conversion, it's really easy. I'm asking $100 for everything (the latches, clips, and a manual sunroof headliner), or $75 without the headliner.
Steve, is this what you're looking for? http://www.sidv.org/manualsunroof.htm

would probably be an arm and a leg to ship.. the price is good, i just think shipping might beat me up a bit.
