Default For those of you with A/C Clutch issues...

Here is some information I have been compiling.

First of all most of us have the Nippodenso 10P15E compressor, the 944/2 folks anyway.

For those of you still running ICE COLD R-12 then this is for you.

I have the common AC clutch/coil pulling too many amps and blowing the fuse.

The AC works great for about 1-15min, then nothing.

So I have been trying to just find the clutch/coil calling and emailing every place I find. I have had some progress

First off the exact compressor was used in many cars (Ford, Honda, Chrysler even John Deere) but had different mounting tabs and electrical connectors, basically same engine different body styling (Crown Victoria + Grand Marquis) so I have been able to find a plethora of clutches, I have included some links.

The only that explicitly says FOR PORSCHE

I found a bearing and other parts at a tractor supply store. The same ND compressor was used on a bunch of Kubota and Massey stuff in the 80s. I'll see if I can dig up the name of the place (it was quite a while ago).

Kubota + Massey!

The list goes on and on.

I know where the Kubota dealership is here. I need to start cold calling all these places.

Did you change yours in the car or drop it and do it on the bench?

I pulled it. The system was empty anyway so it was easier.

I don't recall if there would have been enough space to do it on the car. These are press fit (so you need a puller) and not just snap rings so you need a decent amount of space to do it in on the car.

Hmm, well with a smaller puller I should be able to do it mounted if I remove the cooling fan.

But if push comes to shove I'll evacuate the system and drop it.

Just curious if you can change the clutch on the compressor without having to evac the system?

If you're asking if you will lose refrigerant, no, you will not.

Whether you have the space to get a puller in depends on what else you take out of the way and how big the puller is.

Is the bearing what causes the high current draw?

Nope. A failing clutch does. Its electromagnetic. When it starts to wear out and the air gap gets too large it takes a lot of current to lock it up.

A failing clutch bearing is easy to tell: it's squeaking and complaining when the AC is off, and the noises immediately go away once the clutch engages.

My clutch fails. If I could replace that somehow with the compressor in place that would be awesome.

Yeah we will see how that goes, I need to find a puller that isn't too long. I'm sure it's possible, I haven't even looked yet, for real anyway.

I'd rather pull my radiator vs. my compressor.

With the cooling fan and radiator gone I should be able to get any puller in there!

Went ahead and ordered the Porsche clutch solenoid.

Costs the most, but it's "NEW" and it can't hurt to buy something with the right name already on it!

I'm gonna drop the compressor and do out of the car, even though I was told I don't need a puller, just snap rings.

Will report back.

Ok, I don't know why interest died all the sudden on this thread, but let me wrap it up.

If you are having the clutch coil blow your fuse then you need a new clutch coil.

Use the above link to parts geek, that's the one you need.

I removed mine from the car, but you could easily do it in on the car, but dropping it down and leaving the hoses assembled.

No special tools required, just used the write up on Pelican Parts for the ND 10P15C, it's the same compressor.

AC blows ICE COLD and feels great, also that 7.5 amp is not blowing which is always nice
