Default Severe Engine Miss

Hey all. Long time lurker, first time poster.

Bought my 944 a little over 4 years ago and have barely had any issues with it whatsoever. It's an 84' and has been reliable to say the least thus far.

However about two years ago I had the timing belt changed, and about 2 months after it developed a severe valve tick. The tick never goes away or gets quieter/louder. It stays consistent weather you run the car for 5 minutes or 3 hours. Oil changes haven't made a difference in the ticking. I run 15w40 in it but have been told I should try 20w50.

Also just recently the engine began running very rough. It is EXTREMELY hard to start and when it does start you have to be incredibly gentle with the throttle. If you punch it too hard it simply cuts out. However the car idles no problem. When trying to start it you occasionally get a heavy smell of fuel (Like it's flooding out).

Tried changing the cap, rotor, plugs and wires and nothing. Cleaned off all the vehicles grounds and whatnot as well. I've been told by a few people it could be a weak ignition coil or faulty fuel pressure regulator.

Any and all ideas are greatly appreciated.

Here's a video of the car running to give you an idea.

Try replacing the ignition switch, and checking your throttle position sensor and airflow meter for the starting problem. For the ticking, you may have a dead lifter.

I'll give the TPS and airflow meter a try. As for the ticking I assumed it was something nasty. Figured this was the last year for this motor anyways.

Where are you located? Perhaps a RL user could assist.

You "had" the belt changed 2 years ago. Was the belt re-tensioned? Have you personally inspected the belt recently?

The lifter noise could be a stuck lifter (doubts), you could put some SeaFoam in per the can instructions.

I doubt weak coil spark. Check that the rotor is tight and on straight. Check the distributer cap for carbon tracks in side the cap. Change the plugs. Check for arching on the spark plug wires (in the dark)

GL & welcome
John

I'm about an hour north of Toronto. The belt was re-tensioned but I am going to change it again in the next few weeks. It looks like it's beginning to wear again.

When I did change the cap the old one was quite badly worn and there was a fair amount of carbon in the cap.

As for the Seafoam I am going to try some of that. I used is in my Mazda Protege a month or so ago and the stuff worked fantastic.

I wonder if maybe a valve spring could be broken. So at high rpms the valve is actually being forced to close...
Just an idea. When you change the belt; pull the cam tower and inspect lifters and springs.
