Is there a way to calibrate the speedometer?
1983 944na, 5-speed.
My speedometer reads about 6mph too fast. Is there any way to correct that?
My tires are 215x60x15. Is that the correct size?

6mph too fast at what speed? usually it's off by a percentage....not a constant speed.
short of taking out the speedometer and moving the needle....don't think there's any other options

Mine shows much faster than actual also -- probably 10mph over at highway speeds. I called Palo Alto Speedometer and they said they can calibrate it, but wanted $3 or $4 hundred dollars (and you have to remove and replace the speedo yourself). That seemed a bit steep, but I'm not sure what all is involved. Would love to learn there's just a pot or something to adjust...?

Lol hello again jerry! My 83 does the exact same thing! I have done tons of research and couldn't find a solution. Seems like all the early 44's have it, and I've pretty much gotten used to it. I'd love to see an answer!

Mine did the same thing I move the needle and it dead on now. According to 3 GPSs and a digital MPH gauge on my friend civic that drove next to me at various speeds. But I also replaced the speedo cable since mine like to bounce all over the place.

Three Wheelin'
Pull off the needle and reinsert slightly anticlockwise. You have to remove it when you swap the odometer gear. The tricky part is getting the right spot.

you guys are lucky...mine is about 10mph off up to about 60 mph and then it can be waaaaay off. for instance, my speedo reads 90-mph and according to my gps i'm doing 76 mph. i don't have a solution, only another faulty speedo to add to the ruckus.

Well, I dont feel comfortable taking out the speedo, so I guess I'll just have to live with it.
On the plus side, it'll help keep me out of trouble cause I tend to speed a little anyways.

it isn't fun....but not hard.
take off the steering wheel, remove the steering column covers, remove the gauge dash piece out, unhook the speedo cable from back of the speedo gauge, remove the gauge, use flathead screwdriver to uncrimp the holding ring, then use a drill to spin the speedo, remove the needle and put it at another location, respin the speedo and see if it's reading faster or slower. repeat until u think you're correct. reverse to install

It makes no sense that you would have to move the needle? What caused the needle in the first place to "jump out and move itself 5 ahead"???

I have an 84 which is also about 10 mph too fast. That hasen't stopped me from getting a speeding ticket.
Seems there must be an easier way to calibrate the speedo than the944.com instructions. There must be a ratio of cable rpm to a predetermined speed indication on the guage. Could a gear have slipped in the mechanical guage or something to cause this in the first place?
Anyone have access to the Porsche maintenance manual? Any reference to calibration of speedo there? Who made the guages for Porsche?
