Default front cam assy oil passage?

On the front of the cam tower there is a small hole that looks like an oil channel. It is sealed by a small round rubber plug-like seal. What is the purpose of this passage? I cannot see that it fills any purpose.

I suppose I should add that this is all behind the timing cover, between the cover and the cam tower.

cambox and head is also used on the 928- this passage was used for that but not for the 944.
