Default Looking for info on short 5th install for 944

Anyone have photos, notes, cheat sheets, etc for doing the short 5th gear install ?

My 84 944 tranney with LSD has the tall 5th gear but I'm finaly ready to install a short 5th gear into it.. I have the donor trans on hand, thus I need to dismantle them both, to some degree.

Looking for tips, tricks, photos, anything. Before i crack these baby's open.

Sorry can't help you, but while you are getting this info....

Could you or someone explain in plain talk what the advantage of the LSD is? What do you recomend using the short vs tall 5th gear for? Track, daily etc? I really want to know.

I have some nice pictures. That I took when I did this job a few months back.

I was going to put togther a tutorial on this, but have not gotten to it.

There was a proceedure I found for some V8 swaps. That used a 951 box, but they are the same except for the torque on shaft nut. It is MUCH lower on the NA boxes.

1) LSD - prevents wheel slip. Without it, the unloaded rear wheel can spin uselessly instead of putting power to the ground. LSD can also help under braking depending on its locking rate.

2) for 1988, porsche used a shorter 5th gear in the 944. The "long" gear subjects you to about a 1200rpm drop when upshifting from 4th to 5th. Great for cruising, but slower when racing because HP and TQ curves are too low to "pull" nicely. Shorter 5th keeps you in the HP/TQ curves better, but sacrifices noise and fuel economy.
