Default Shift ****/boot options?

So one of the TEPO's (The Evil Previous Owner) of my car hacked up the shift ****, removing the slot for the retaining clip.

When I replaced the shift rod, the old shift **** wouldn't stay on. Another rennlister was kind enough to send me his unabused shift ****.

However I now had the challenge of removing my old shift boot and reinstalling it onto the new **** without damaging it. You can guess how that went for me...

So now I have a decent shift **** and a torn shift boot. I'm pessimistic on my chances of installing another shift boot over the shift **** without damaging it.

So what are my shift boot/**** options? I see I can buy a factory piece from Pelican for $77 + shipping. Are there other aftermarket choices? Cost and where to order from?

TIA!

I got the kit from rennbay. It's pretty nice. It covers the whole shift ****.

So you bought the shift boot from them? How'd you stretch it over the shift **** without damaging the shift boot?

Are you talking about the leather shift boot, or the rubber piece that goes underneath it to keep out heat and exhaust fumes?

I got the leather shift boot, it stretches over the ****. You have to pry off the shift pattern button on the top of the shifter. The excess leather from the boot gets fitted into the hole, then you push the shift pattern back on to compress the leather in there so it doesn't come out. It has an elastic band on the bottom of to fit around the console trim piece.

This is probably easier to understand:

I'm talking about the leather shift boot, but now that you mention it I'm can't remember if the rubber piece is there too...

Yea, the rennbay tutorial is a lot easier to understand than me.

Mine didn't have the rubber boot either when I bought the car. I ordered a new one for it, but I don't know that it made any difference. It doesn't stay on very well.

Well, figured out my problem, instead of removing/installing the shift **** out the top of the boot, I was trying to put it in from the bottom and stretching the boot over it. Oops.

Now that I know I can just order the boot and save $30.

IIRC the rubber boot is just a stretch fit.

Yea, pull it over the top.

Before you try to put the **** Cap back on: Use a Flat Tip ScrewDriver to push the excess leather into the Cap Hole. Make it as Smooth as possible before putting the Cap in.

You should have NO Bunching or Wrinkles... I have heard people say its impossible,,, but using this screwdriver trick; mine is smooth and perfect!! I'll try to find a picture

I wasn't able to get mine to tuck in perfectly...looks like a grade-a hack job

I'll probably just end up buying a new one down the line.

If I remember correctly, the factory leather boot was a smooth leather, the grain wasn't so rough as the replacement shift boots that I have seen. The leather seemed thinner. Is the rennbay boot "factory like"? Also, the original leather of items in P-cars has a certain smell to it. Does recovering old leather items in the interior give the car a different smell?

The rennbay kit is thin leather. I don't know what an oem one feels like though.

The rubber boot is a stretch fit and it goes over a little metal lip.

I got the Rennbay boot and the aluminum shift cap...looks great...warm up the leather a bit in the sun or with a hair dryer to make it more pliable.
