lapping helmets question
Hey all,
looks like my motorcycle helmet (sa 2000) wont do the job or qualify for track this year. I need a new one (at least 2005). And yeah, looking for good quality, best price.
Does anybody have any recommendations on brands and styles....
A seller wanted to sell me one at a store today.... HJC Si-12 2005 for 500$
I know that now they have 2010, but 2005 is still accepted on track, and I think they sell for a cheaper price. For example, the same style (HJC SI-12 2010) was selling for 700$
This was not in my spending plans for this year, so I'm looking on the internet for other brands and prices.
My first motorcycle helmet was a HJC, kept it for 2 months, and then went with a Shoei. It was just way too cheap. At 70miles per hour, it was like a tornado (wind noise) in my head. The Shoei did a big difference.
I understand that lapping in a car is not the same (the wind factor, I got a full windshield protecting me), but is HJC a good brand for car lapping?
Anyway, anybody... any recommendations... again good quality best price, and maybe free shipping to canada : ) maybe a Bell?

To clarify I will ask.. do you need to use it ALSO as a motorcycle helment or will its use solely be in an enclosed car cabin? (ie, questioning how much concern you have for helmet aerodynamics vs meeting a safety rule.)

If I get another bike in the future (maybe this year : ) it's only going to be a cafe racer, not a speed machine. And I can use my actual helmet for that no problem.

Since most helmets are built to comply with a safety standard, they are relatively interchangeable. Differences come down more to style, eyeport opening size, shape, colors, weight and generally how they feel on your head. To me Bell's tend fit my head shape best, so I continue to use them.

Pyrotech makes a full face with side air, for like $300. Its more or less a clone of the Bell BR-1 and uses some of the same face shield hardware.
A Bell BR-1 will set you back about $400.
I have a BR-1 with side air and like it. My only complaint is that the liner is not removable, which would be a nice option for cleaning.
You might get some more good opinions over on the Racing forum.

Does the Snell rating apply to both motorcycle and track car helmets? I am interested in a helmet I could use for both, though I speculate there would be some aerodynamic stylings on a motorcycle helmet you won't find on cabin helmets. I don't trust my current one to anything more than go-kart rides around the neighborhood, but something's better than nothing!

but he told me that protection wise, it's the same.

An advantage of Shoei is that replacement parts are available for a long time (visor mechanisms, visors, etc). I've never found a HJC that fit me, so I have no real experience with them, but until recently they looked and felt cheap. (I use only for motorcycles).

From a protection standpoint they are not the same. Keep in mind that impact protection is not the only thing tested. The SA rated helmets must also pass flame testing.

I am doing De this year and they require a Snell M or SE (motor cycle or car) 2005 or better helmet, I have been into Motorcycling for over 25 years and used that 2000, helmet for Auto Cross but wont cut it for DE so I found a HJC CL-16, ($125ish) xxl in white (less heat) do a search on Google/Yahoo.
IF you where riding a motor cycle I would say invest in some thing a bit better but for DE and Auto Cross th is should be more than adequate
