Default Engine swaps & Autocross

What are the rules on swapping engines when autocrossing? Is it even legal?

It can be legal but might land you in a class where the car can't possibly be competitive.

It depends what engine you swap in. If it's a Porsche engine you can run in Street Mod as long as the engine was available for that particular model. So I believe a 944 turbo engine could go into an NA but if you were to put a 968 or LS engine in an NA it would put you into the modified class.

It really depends on the club you want to run with... If we are talking about the SCCA, then you need to read the rule book. If we are talking about backdating or using a newer engine. It has to be a engine that was offered in that model, for that vintage... In other words, a 968 engine in a 924 is a no go for SP (street prepared). However, you can do this type of a swap for XP, SM and I want to say P(repared).

Engine swaps for the most part are not allowed in Stock. SP cars again must use an engine that was available in that specific model.

The following link will take you to the SCCA page for a link to Solo rules and FAQ's:

It depends on what club you do autocross with and what engine you want to swap in. But I'm pretty sure you won't stay in a stock class in most clubs. Check the rule book for the club(s) you plan on doing events with.

Personally I would say stay away from engine swaps if you plan on being at all competitive. Most of the time you'll end up in a class with highly modified cars and unless you put some serious money into the rest of the car you won't stand a chance at keeping up.

What engine would you want to swap in?

Most allow "with in" series.. ie, any 2.5l 8v, n/a can go in any 944 that came with a 2.5l 8v, na motor.. Turbo motors for turbos, S2 motors in S2's. Some might require that "all differences" between models, say a '87 turbo gets a turboS transplant.. then you would need all other factory "turbo S" upgrades to make the car complete.

Swapping cross models? read the rulebook.

I know pretty much nothing about autocrossing and I was just wondering for once I start. And I want to put a 968 engine in my car.

You'll need to research the rule book for the club you want to A/X with. Like others have said; a 968 engine in an '86 is likely going to land you in a class with some pretty serious competition.
