need help with kricket tensioning
just to clarify. do you turn anticlcokwise 1.5 teeth then set the belt to 40 pounds?
this would make the long side 50 pound when turned back to tdc and is pretty damn tight on a cold engine and when it heats up it gets even tighter.
does this sound right.
I had a shop set the tension but i just switched belts again as I had a problem with the belt (looked damaged) and the shop had set it way looser It read 40 pounds at tdc and less than 30 pounds when rolled back (kricket didn't even get a reading) and the belt was floppy.

It is very hard to get an accurate measurement with the Krikit. I own one but only use it for the BB.
You have to put the Krikit on the exact same spot each time. There is very little room.
Your finger & arm will go numb.
I do not suggest using it for any consistant measurement of accuracy on the cam belt.
You might be more accurate with the 90 degree twist (see Clarks) method.

+1 on Twist Method... I had a kricket tool too and did not use it on my belts.

spin the water pump by hand after tensioning your belt. if you cannot make the WP pulley spin (BY HAND) you are either weak or the adjustment is too tight, if the wp spins with ease, belt is too loose,

would the water pump test be with a dead cold engine.
the belts tighten up a lot when the engine heats up.
oh and I definately can't turn the water pump at all cold or hot.
when the engine was cold I did sort of a twist method and the kricket reads 30 pounds back from tdc and at tdc 40 pounds.
I think I misread the instructions of the kricket it says to adjust tension at 1.5 teeth before tdc but doesn't say to measure the tension here.
so 40 pounds should propbably be at tdc not rolled back which sound correct as it is already damn tight at 40 pounds at tdc if I made it tighter to get 40 pounds before tdc it would be insanely tight and defninately not correct.
will the belt get damage if it is running too tight for a while?
I don't have time until tomorrow evening to adjust the tension.

Cold engine-temp at 68F--Timing marks at TDC--rotate crank 2Xs to TDC.

On cold engine ----wash your fingers with windex--grab the WP pully with two hands and try to turn. If it is nearly impossible to turn the belt is too tight.

YES and the second disaster is that you will burn out the WP pully seal or bearing

At TDC---no roll back. Rotate the crank 2Xs to TDC for the test every time.

At TDC---no roll back. Rotate the crank 2Xs to TDC for the test every time.
Late cars with the spring mechanical tensioner set the spring tension at TDC---NO Rollback. Per Porsche (YMMV)

okay thanks. i'll do the water pump test tomorrow.
i'm also pretty certain now that the kricket is suppose to set the belt to 40 pound at tdc not rolled back (rol back to just tension the belt).
I will try the water pump method and then test with the kricket to see if it is close to 40 pounds.

also i'd like to tension my belt a bit on the tight side because it's a new belt and from experience then get a lot looser in a 1000kms or so..... last time after the initial tension I checked teh belt 2 months later and it was super loose I was shocked how loose it was.
