Default Rubber Center Clutch

I have an 84 that is making a clunk noise upon pulling out from a stop. My question is, when the rubber center clutch is failing does the clunk happen before the car starts moving or after? My car moves a little then clunk....it sound like the rear but hard to tell.

I checked:
CV bolt torque
Transaxle mounts
Torque of rear shock bolts
Checked movement of torque tube (does not move thru the inspection hole in the transaxle)

Things to check:
Motor mounts
Bad CV Joint
????????

Do you have about 100k miles?

Dollars to doughnuts it's the clutch.

P.S. if it is the clutch, you should also be able to get it to clunk if you abruptly get on and off the gas in, say, 3rd gear.

This is what mine did at about 70k. The clutch was toast.

You are on your Make It Home Tabs"

This is the last effort by the clutch to get you to a garage>

John, I think that photo of my 83 clutch has been posted too many times to count. It sure shows how the tabs can bang back and forth. I drove very carefully on those tabs for over 5K and the rubber core never completely shattered.

Steve,
It is a classic! I have corrected my saved photos to note "KuHL 951"

I have just added my own. When my rubber discs exploded, there was no wear on the "make it home tabs" 2X . Your gentle feathering of the clutch pedal to get an extra 5000 miles is extraoardinary.

Thanks. Its good to get different comparisons.
John

Would the car move forward a little bit before making the clunk sound while on the limp tabs?

If the rubber centre is shot then it moves back and forth against the tabs. It's most noticeable as slack in the drive train. For example when you shift up or down do you notice it banging around? That's what happened on my 944. Followed by destruction of the R & P.

I only notice it when pulling out and it makes the clunk noise, but not all the time. If it does not make the clunk when I pull out I have to drive a few hundred feet then stop and pull out to get it to clunk again (no need to shift during the few hundred feet).
