Default Clutch start cancel

Early 1985 944. Do these cars have a clutch start safety/cancel? I can start the car in gear. So, either it has a cancel and it's not working right and I should fix it. Or it doesn't have a cancel and is operating as Porsche intended. And I should remember to mash the clutch before turning the starter.

Thanks
