I need to replace my oil pan gasket. I wasn't going to do it myself until I got the $800+ estimate. Does that seem high?
Can anyone reccomend a shop in the DC/Northern VA area?

yup. All labor getting stuff out of the way. The crossmember is in the way which essentially means that it comes out and you'll have to support the engine to get the pan off.
It's one of those things that also has quite a few WYIT jobs...motor mounts, rod bearings, Lindsey 3 piece crossover to replace the stock (which will save you all that labor if your pan leaks, etc... and you have to get back in there), rear main seal, etc...
It's one of those things you don't want to mess with very often which is why $800 is probably going to be on the low end. From what I've read, it's not that difficult of a job - just time consuming. I thought I was going to be in the same boat recently when I found a sheared bolt in the pan, but I was able to get it out and replace the bolt and no major leaks.

If you do the oil pan gasket, replace the rod bearings (rod nuts must be new as well-upgraded).
Some will also weld the oil pickup tube for strength.

I've heard that its not that hard. Thats why I'm still contemplating giving it a shot. Just not sure if I'm confident in my abilities to takle it on my own.

It is a long job easily 8-10 hours on non turbo car. Longer on the turbo.
While you are there you should do rod bearings as they add on maybe 1 hour and are good to change. Should also do motor mounts. These are probably old. They are easy to change while you are in there, but expensive parts.
I just finished this job on my Turbo and it was very time consuming. Easier in fact to pull the head on my 944 NA race car.
