Ok to skip the water pump and do t-belt only?
My 86 na is overdue for a major this spring. It was last done back in 7/2004and they did it all: t-belt, bs belt, water pump, rollers, pulleys, etc. I've only done about 20,000 miles since that point and was curious if I should just skip the water pump this time around, or do it all to be safe?

I'd skip it. 20,000 miles isn't a lot presuming you have run a proper coolant mix for the duration. I'd be tempted to skip the rollers too if you plan to do the belt again in 4 years and planned mileage is low. However, if you are paying a mechanic to do it, it may be worth replacing the lot as the labour component is usually the killer.

Most of the time it is good practice to do the pump since you are right there, but it is not needed most of the time. A failed water pump is less damage risk than a failed t-belt. The car will overheat long before any lasting damage as long as you pull over and don't run it too hot for too long.
t-belt failure = bent valves and that is a pain.
failed waterpump = waterpump job.

If you can afford the car being down a few days just buy the Gates Belts. Check each roller for smoothness , no sound when spinning, no side to side play and only replace if necessary. The water pump should last at least 60k miles. Change out every other Belt change. Remember Cam Belt Tension is 40 ft. lbs. and the Balance Belt is only 28 ft. lbs..
