Default Bench testing '84 temp gauge - same as testing in-car?

Clark's Garage says to test the temp gauge by disconnecting the temp sender and connecting a resistor to the wire and to ground.

I have the gauge out on my table and I'm trying to test it, I tried to power terminals 1 and 12 with a resistor in-line, and even with a 280 ohm resistor, the gauge pegs. Is the gauge bad or can I not use the same procedure when the gauge is out of the car?

The car is all apart right now (motor half open, interior mostly emptied), so that's why I can't test it in-car.

I assume you are using 12 VDC as a reference voltage if this is the case that is the problem.
There is a voltage divider reference voltage generated on a circuit board in the cluster. I do not know what the reference voltage / circuit looks like. Wait until you assemble the car far enough to run the test as intended.
Hope this helps

That's good to know. I guess unless I learn this divided voltage, I can't do anything. If it takes until the car is back together, then I'll measure the voltage from the circuit board and post it up for future reference.

Thanks.
