Quick fix is to pull off the old wire and run a new wire from the instrument cluster (generator light) to the alternator

Ok I pulled out the instrument cluster today and noticed the harness in the back of the cluster. I'm assuming it's the solid blue wire in the harness that I run the wire to the alternator? Or do I run it to the bulb itself?

On the 83 cluster, the wire comes from pin 11 and is blue. If you cut the wire, the bulb should go out. Then, run a new wire from pin 11 to the alt and it should work.

Thanks to you, after weeks of trying to figure out the alarm/alternator, my car is now running with a working alternator. I ran a new wire from pin11 from the back of the cluster to the alternator and now im getting a charge from the alternator. Thanks so much!!!

Any idea what pin that would be on a late model car? I have and 87 turbo with the same problem. So, if the alarm is active the blue wire is grounded? Would removing the alarm box fix the problem? Apparently, mine is stuck on. When opening the door the alarm just went off. The key to the alarm is MIA.

The alarm should disable the DME relay and the alternator when active, Just use the procedure in clarks garage to bypass the alarm.

I did the bypass and the alternator seems to be charging. Reads 12V without the motor running and just under 14V with the motor running. It was under 10V and dropping as the motor ran, prior to the bypass. The voltmeter bulb never illuminates during bulb check or when starting the motor as it should.

Sounds like you need to replace the alt bulb in the dash. Your year (87) has a resistor in parallel to the bulb so if the bulb burns out, the alt will still get a voltage on the blue wire,

That was my initial thought. I swapped it with the oil pressure bulb. It lit up in the oil pressure position and the alternator was still not lighting. The volt meter shows it is charging. The light would be nice though.

See if you are getting power to the light bulb socket. Could be a bad connection in the dash.
