If you don't have ABS, then why were the sensors testing fine? Typically Porsche did not install sensors on cars that did not have ABS.

Same here. No ABS light at start up and no light for a minute or two after the car starts to roll. Light comes on after that
This indicates normally system which is more or less OK. Sensors are OK and all electrical combonents work as they should. ABS systems usually start to work from 20-30 km/h. If there is something wrong, warning light will lite up when this speed is reached. In most cases ABS sensors and toothed gears cap is too big or toothed gear is just very dirty. My wild guess is the latter.

I don't know why things are the way they are, but considering the condition of this car from the PO, anything's possible. There is the ABS module under the passenger dash, yet there is no relay in the fuse box.

It was recommended that maybe a new fuse box was put in and the hole not punched out for the relay. Gonna check that when I get home.

Option code 593 ABS
There is a option code sticker in the trunk underneath the carpet near the lock.

Check the part number on the relay in G22. You have a relay in the position for the turbo water pump, and with a N/A you shouldn't have one there. Part # 928 615 124 01
For what ever reason, my ABS relay is in G22 on my 89 S2 also.
Is your ABS light on at startup, or after you begin to move? Sorry if you already answered that, but I am just not clear on that.

Thanks,

Tom

It is on constantly but I did find the relay, in another location. So how do I test the relay to determine if it is good or bad. I read somewhere to connect 12v power, but how do you go about doing that? Electrical not my strong suit.

If you dont have ABS, then why is the light on? Simple answer. There is a bulb socket for every late car for the Anti-Lock light. Putting a bulb in this socket and not having ABS will trigger this light. Perhaps someone was trying to do an ABS retrofit and put a bulb in there. There are also check engine lights on the gauge clusters too that are not used .

However if the ! light is on, and so is the Anti-lock then you probably have ABS. If you sensors test ok, it could be the sensors cant read the tooth gear because of dirt etc... It could also be that the control module, or the ABS pump are faulty.

On my S2 Cabriolet, the Anti-Lock light would go on after I started driving forward. If I drove in reverse it wouldn't go on. One of the sensors in the rear was bad. If the other sensors are reading speed correctly, and one of the sensors isn't reading properly, the ABS light will go on after you have started moving.

If it comes on before you start moving, it could be the pump or the control module.

If you would like to swap out the control module, or the pump, I have a good pump and computer for $65 shipped.

Remove the ABS relay, jumper socket pin 30 (7) to pin 87 (5), turn key on and check ABS fail light. If the ABS fail light functions properly (on and then out) then the relay is bad.
The ABS Relay relay is unusual in that there is a resistor in parallel with the coil and and a zener diode regulating the relay output voltage.
I do not have ABS on my 944 but would be willing to take apart a bad relay and try to repair it, if someone would send me a bad relay.
The relays are expensive.

Take another look at your fuses. Numbers 19 and 26. Both should be 15 amp, and it looks like from your picture you have a ten amp in number 26. Do your brake lights work correctly?

Please note that the ABS relay is in:
G20 for the 944
G22 for the 968 (and I bet, the S2)

Workshop manual, Vol III, page 45-03

Stick Shift - I'll check those fuses. Also, I never noticed the hood switch was unhooked, figures.

My ABS relay is in G22. i did find it but haven't had a chance yet to test it. Doing brakes and rotors all the way around shortly - will check on dirty sensors at that time.

Sure learning an awful lot!!

Just a fyi, the hood switch doesn't really do much of anything. It will trigger the alarm, if you have one and the hood light will only work if you have your marker lights on. First position of the headlight switch.
