Diff problems!!!!
ok so even though i settled for an automatic 83 944 i still find myself loving the car more and more. after fixing the headgasket, water pump, starter, replacing 1 bad injector, plugs and wires i still find that the car isnt performing the way its suppose to. i have never driven another 944 to be able to compare but it seems like even a beat up corolla will pull on me. i was reading about cleaning and or replacing grounds which i will be doing soon. i have noticed while attempting to replace my diff oil that there was trans fluid mixed in which seemed to thin out the diff fluid. how can i fix this problem is there a seal to replace or am i screwed. will bad fluid take away from my cars acceleration. any help will be appreciated thx.
im not trying to make it super fast what im trying to do is make it pick up the way its suppose to. my acceleration sucks and i know its not suppose to be like that. would trans fluid leaking into the diff have anything to do with that? maybe my timing is off when i put the belt back on after doing the head gasket? bad grounds or dme?
it wouldnt hurt to check the grounds and belt timing. but even a perfectly-running 944 automatic will take about 9 seconds to get from 0-60. i dont know if they have a kickdown switch...try disconnecting the battery for a while (like overnight) and then reconnecting it in the morning and (after it warms up) driving it hard...some automatics 'learn' or adapt to driving styles, i dont know if the 944 auto has that capability though.

Hi Darkwan,
I am not familiar with the auto trans but I looked at the WSM (work shop manual) and below is the info in pic.
On the performance issue, when you did the HG (head gasket) earlier, did you get the head and valves machined and tuned up?

It`s a fairly common problem on these 087 trans by this age. The usual cause is the oil seal fitted into the case bore for the governor shaft. The ATF is pressurized and a bad seal permits ATF to fill the diff section. This seal is NLA from Porsche and not a conventional size, IIRC 31x?x7. Aftermarket one available from Chicago Rawhide (CR3203 IIRC) IMHO it would be possible for a competent shop to fit one without a full tear down. However by now your final drive / pinion shaft bearings most likely need replacing anyway.
Low ATF (due to it being in the diff) could easily cause your poor performance, firstly in the torque converter and possibly slipping forward / direct clutch from low pressure. If the engine AND TRANS were in good condition a stall speed test would be useful for diagnosis.
A dodgy fix for this problem is to replace the ATF with one that has a GL4 rating, use in both sections. Can`t recall the brand, but there is at least 1 available, google.
