Lightbulb 944 stereo installation site

Well, I've done so much friggin' research on this topic, and there was no one good place to find info...I kept having to search and research through forums, so I made my own. It's simple and small, but it's already been pretty useful to me. Maybe you guys can use it, too.

If you have an install, or really anything else you'd like to add or correct, please let me know. I've looked at so much crap in tring to figure out what to do with my car that most of it disappeared, but I'd like to add stuff and make it a pretty comprehensive page on the subject--if nothing else then a good bookmark page that has all the links you'd want in the same place. I just sorta threw this together and it's by no means pentultimate...So, help me out and let me know what you think!

I would add some notes about the differences between early model 944's (pre 86) and late model ones. Inparticular, the dash clearence issue on the later model. The dash partially covers the grills on these cars, and allows very little clearance for grills/spacers that stick out. I like my Radioshack grils, but they are pressed so hard against the dash when the door is closed, that they leave an impression on it.

I'm actually getting a little worried about the long term affects of using these, I might switch back to using the stock grills, with some kind of spacers behind them to clear the tweeter. The stock grills are flat, so they should fit under the dash better.

Nice work. Speaking as someone who just installed a stereo, your site is a great idea!

I installed a Porsche/Becker CDR-220 in place of my old Blaupunkt. I got my hiring harness from a place called SW Stereo.

During my installation, I called Stefan at SW Stereo and he was EXTREMELY knowledgeable and helpful.... He guided me through the tricky parts of the install process. Stefan's technical line is (252) 636-1117.

I have no affiliation with SW Stereo (I don't even live in the same state!)....just a satisfied customer.

Please let us know if you find a set of 4x6's that you are pleased with (I believe you are leaning towards Boston Acoustics?). I will probably call Stefan and consult his advice too...

I would also add some info about the factory Porsche grills which come with spacers to accomodate deeper speakers. I managed to fit the Boston Acoustics FX7e speakers in with these grills. They aren't cheap but they look good and work well without any hacking.

Do you have a link or a part number where you can get these? I think the FAQ made some mention of them.

The part numbers are in the 944 Stereo FAQ. I called Pelican and got some numbers on them... I didn't bother writing down the prices, it was somewhere near $80 bucks. I think i'd rather buy some 80 dollar speakers with grills (like the Blau's or Kenwood's) and give them a go before getting the snap on grills at that cost.

I would appreciate any pics anyone has of these though.
