thermostat and fan switch.
well, i got the busted hose fixed. but the temp gauge still goes up a bit in stop and go traffic...i noticed today that when this happened and i had the car idling in the drive the fans didn't go on. is it hard to replace the fan switch?...is that what usually goes with these things? also, could a bad thermostat cause this? is that a relatively easy job to replace too? thanks.

From under the car pull the connectors off the temp switch. Short the connectors together. With the ignition switch off one fan should run on low. With the ignition switch on both fans should run. This assumes you have a two terminal switch.

The fan switch is pretty easy, the plug pulls straight out, you'll need a 29mm deep socket or equivalent. The thermostat: get ready for some cursing! It is not difficult but it can be a bitch to get to the circlip with enough leverage to make it move and then squeeze it out of it's slot. Get a good set of 90 degree needle nose pliers and file the ends till they just fit the circlip, it is tight in there, I suggest you at least remove the oil filter for better access, you may also need a small mirror to see the orientation of the clip. Not a hard job but it requires a lot of patience. Drain the radiator by disconnecting the bottom hose, don't bother with the drain plug, make sure you have a large catch pan, coolant will come out rapidly and all over the place if you do it too fast.
Hope this helps,
Joe

as long as it doesnt go past the 3/4 mark you're ok. running warm isnt a bad thing, you get better gas mileage like that anyway, as long as you arent in the red.

I've developed a similar problem: my fans keep turning on and off, on and off, at idle and just after turning the car off. I can hear the fans kick in, and the voltmeter on the dash drops a bit when they initially turn on. I just had back-to-back DE events, so I did a lot of hard driving. Also, about 2 months ago, I had a lower temp thermostat put in. (and a coolant flush) I believe my mechanic left the stock fan switches in there. I have a 944S2: is fan switch under the air flow sensor on the right front side of the engine bay? Does anyone have the part # for it?
Sounds like a simple task to replace: I wish to give it a try. Joe: can you elaborate a little on the fan switch procedure, or is there really nothing to it?
Thanks for your help!

Z-Man,
You've got an S2 but I think the location of the fan switch is the same as mine: radiator top, driver's side. To get to it you may have to remove the air box and other assorted parts. I got my lower temp switch and thermostat from www.performanceproducts.com/

Mr. Z,
In my case it helped a lot, the car runs much cooler. At the time I also flushed the system just like Skip explained: www.tech-session.com/Paragon/944/944_cooling.htm

Mr. Z:
My temp guage NEVER goes above the 2nd tick mark with the lower thermo. (NOTE: I checked, and my mech. did put in a new fan switch). My engine stayed there even after 20 minutes of DE driving!
Update on my fan on/off issue: my mechanic said it could be related to the a/c system: sounds to him like a bad relay, or maybe a bad switch.
Joe: thanks again for your help!
Good luck, Mr.Z,
-Z.

The fan comes on when you turn on the A/C to deal with the extra heat and load on the engine. By turning it on you are just checking that the fans haven't crapped out.
If the fan comes on, then I would go ahead and get a new switch. They are only about $10 at Pelican Parts.
