Not to mention 3K for an early 944 with 200K on the clock is being generous... considering I paid 3200 for a running 951 with less mileage...

OP, you COULD fix it, and continue to enjoy it.. or sell it and be prepared to get between $500 and 1K depending on how long you are willing to wait for a buyer...

FWIW, the wheels alone could be sold for more than the entire car! And you will probably get more $$ out of the loose accessories than the car.

Just get a used head - probably a few hundred $$ here on RL. Then have it fixed. That should put the repair under $1k Then you might be able to sell it for $2500. Otherwise, I agree, you're looking at under a grand - probably $500. Parting it out would yield more money.

A non running car in NorCal fetches $500 - $1000 irrespective of parts and mods. If you aren't going to fix the motor put all the stock parts back on and craiglist it. Sell the aftermarket parts seperatly.

If the plan is to sell it I would not put one dime into it. Not worth your time and hassle when you could be enjoying other things. If you like the car fix it and keep it for the long haul. Hopefully 5 years from now the survivors will be worth something again. We all know how rare good cars are, even today. 10 years from now they will be an endagered species.

Maybe you could find a good junkyard motor for less and just do a straight swap? I have no idea what an n/a longblock goes for, but if you find a car that's been rear-ended or hit in the side you could try to swap it in and sell for a profit or enjoy driving for a while.

It's far less time to do a head swap vs. a whole engine swap...

It sounds like the water pump took out the belt, maybe the tensioners are bad too. 25k into the system's life, you'd want to replace a lot, looking at $400 in parts alone to do a turbo WP, new belt and tensioners, then at best $500 for the head work. That's doing it all yourself, and assumes you already have the tools. If you've got the time to do it, super, otherwise cut your losses.

Around here, mechanics will buy a car like this that needs lots of labor for as good a money as you'd get on the street, and fix it on the side for some extra money. They also get parts for a discount (sometimes).

That would normally be true if the bent valve was the only problem, but in the original post he said his WP and clutch also need changing - if an engine came fully dressed for a few hundred it might be worth it to slap on fresh belts and swap it in. Of course, such an engine with an unknown history might very well be a ticking timebomb waiting to happen, but I just hate seeing such a beautiful looking car go to scrap or parted out just because of a few mechanical issues.
