the brother of former boxing contender Peter McNeely, (Sean McNeely) repairs cars, and heavy equipment... he was also one of the first to get in on the lucrative hydroseeding business "(Green Acres) back in the early '90s... anyway, he's usually the first to comment that cars make everyone's head hurt. a quip, "the alternative ? horses, and they suck too."

hotrod magazine writers have been saying it for years... "in the end there's no substitute for cubic inches...." back in the day, you pulled the 250 c.i v6 out of your Chevy Nova and installed a 350. now it's 30 years later and the automakers of america and europe have brought larger and larger displacement V8s back in a big way. many production cars today are little more than cleverly disguised hotrods.

What exactly is needed for this 10rwhp? Dynoed increase? and why does it cost $700? Hard to source parts? Something custom you made and are selling? Or is it something that a resourceful person could scrounge or build themselves?

Please share your ideas.
Thanks!

It actually only cost's $460 if you don't want a user programmable DME chip...by user programmable I mean you have full control over fuel and ignition tables - no piggyback, no emulator. All software is on the chip itself, which has a USB port and a dial switch so you can have up to 4 different maps saved. They have a dyno chart on the website - the gains are throughout the torque band all the way to redline - because the AFM needs a pressure differential to open the barn door and a MAF does not, the engine is receiving higher pressure air.

The cheapest and easiest HP is always weight loss, and getting your car running to the best of its ability. Lose 150 lbs of junk off the car and then lose another 35lbs of junk off your rear end. Losing that much weight is like driving the car without a rear transaxle. You will notice a nice improvement. Then just drive and enjoy the car. It will not win many drag races but a car that can get close to 30mpg and get you close to 130 top speed. Not bad even by today's standards.

My current waste of money just to keep myself entertained project is:

S2 104.50 mm fresh sunnen honed block w/968 piston squirters aimed at piston skirt
Wossner 11 to 1 pistons w/ .05mm extra valve clearance than stock Mahle
Aggresivelywelded & ported large valve custom spring 2.7 head decked
Wide fire ring headgasket on decked block with new Porsche head studs
matched 2.7 intake manifold, matched big bore enlarged 944 throttle body
Web camshaft with new lifters
Billet aluminum balance shaft drive 3 piece kit & adjustable timing gear kit
968 crankshaft perp drilled with late 968 connecting rods
16valve front dampner pulley
All internals carefully balanced and weighed with all crankshafts acc. and rotating parts
turbo lightened steel flywheel
Spec stage II turbo PP
951 cup clutch
rebuilt torque tube connected to LSD short fifth transaxle
turbo oil filter setup with braided black lines
late '88 stock headers w/wrap, stock freeflow euro exhaust without cat
30lb S2 injectors, '88 DME computer, turbo larger AFM and 924S engine harness in early car
all made to work together with a custom chip
931 header panel on front end with custom stock airbox snorkle cut and grafted to another one and spun to get true ram air from 4 air vents in front header

All in all with alot of hard work on my end, a years worth of parts scavenging. Trading, selling what I dont need, ordering and machine shop runs. I am close to getting this finished and assembling my engine. I will be sure to post assembly process, but I saved a budle with all my hard work which counts for thousands I would have spent. Roughly $5k spent to date on shop fees, chip building, new and used parts from all over.

And well its probably barely going to make 200 HP and TQ but we will see when its in car and on dyno for fine tuning. Whatever the outcome I will finally get to the bottom of the age old question of how much power you can get out of a max bore 3 liter large valve large 8 valve head! Its going in my sunroof delete lightweight euro grey market car which already makes 170 HP with MSD box, camshaft, late headers and late computer with chip!

Shawn after all that you are still leaving good power on the table with the AFM.

Also what valves are you using? I hope you ditched the Porsche ones

Theres always horsewpower on the table unless you go to standalone and a 20k price tag engine build with dry sump and 9k RPM's but this is a fun cafe racer you know?

Largest 7mm stemed SS intake and Exhaust valves you can fit into 2.7 head chambers without huge modifications, best aftermarket spring sets used to match cam specs, I went with a little higher spring pressure than the math says to use with this cam, because I agree with other much wiser builders than I am.

Red-line on motor is 6700ish

Yes it was a fun car, but I simply could not afford to keep it starting a family, re-building from ground up a custom home etc... Same old story but I had fun building it, had a great time for almost a year driving it then it went on to another home.

Sorry not metallic its actually Pearl and has more depth the closer you get. It changes color with lite even more than metallic.
