Default spindle size??

Just a quick question.

Is there any difference between an 86' NA spindle than any other early (83-85) spindle?

I know the 86 turbo spindles are different....but that's also the first year of the turbo, so they are an odd size.

Wondering if the last year of early offset NA spindles are also an odd size....

Thanks!

Hollow hole on driver's side pre '85 that will snap like it has osteoporosis. The 85.5 NA spindle is the strongest of the early smaller bearing spindles. Add bigger brakes and wheels (86T) they'll snap too.

I'm actually doing your swap.

I have a spare set of early strut housings, and a set of 87' turbo spindles.

I want to buy an extra early spindle, so I have a working model to weld in the insert to the strut housing. I want to compare the early and late spindles for alignment reasons..I have a beat on an 86 NA spindle, I just need to know if the strut mounting point holes are the same as the rest of the "early" NA spindles....

Are you doing the insert mod?
The late spindles are 18mm wide and EARLY are 20mm wide. The adapter makes up for that difference and converts from 58mm to 63mm center to center on the strut/spindle interface. Stay away from any early spindle when doing big brake upgrades....snap, crackle, pop

83-86 NA spindles..................20mm wide and 58mm C2C
86T, 87-up NA, Turbo, M030 .........18mm wide and 63mm C2C

Note....The 86T spindle still has the smaller Early bearings, that's why they snap at the small outer bearing land because they had bigger brakes and wheels added.

Yeah yeah, I'm clear on all of that.

What I am concerned about is the actual strut to spindle angle (camber). I don't want to use camber plates to get the correct camber.

Is the angle of the 2 strut mounting holes the same in both early and late spindles?

Early = 11 degrees
Late = 15 degrees

Alright... So how do I make up for that difference? I want to run "stock" camber for good tire wear

(Thank you for replying to this as well)

No problem. Technically you would want to move the lower strut mount hole OUT by 4 degrees.
