Post S2 transmission in an NA?

Are the gear ratios the same on an s2 and an na? The s2 tranny is stronger right? Will it work on an early car? I can get an s2 tranny for a really good price( I think) What is an s2 tranny worth? Thanks!

I think only the final drive in the S2 is the same as the NA. The S2 gearbox shares every gear ratio besides 5th and the final drive with the 944 turbo tranny.

As far as it working, I'm pretty sure that it should bolt right up...Although others here who have done these swaps could tell you what all is involved.

The price of the S2 tranny will vary based on condition and whether or not it has LSD. I'm not an expert, but I think a good price would be $700-$1000 for non-LSD. Add $500 for LSD.

thanks!! so do you think it is a good idea to put an s2 tranny in an na? will it be much slower? I don't know what the ratios mean. They don't seem to be that different. So $500 for one with lsd in great shape with low miles is a good deal it sounds like.

Supposedly the S2 tranny is as strong as the turbo's.

I don't think your car would be much slower with an S2 box in it. The ratio differences are so small in most of the gears that you would probably hardly notice. 4th and 5th might not pull quite as hard but it would be close.

85944NA -
It is a good deal - to get the S2 w/LSD for $500. The car will be slower, but by so little that you probably won't notice.
Good Luck!

awesome, assuming I need a tranny( I"m pretty sure) I'm going to go for it. Thanks!! Spacecowboy, my car is an early car, what year is yours? Will it still bolt right up to an early car? Do I need any other parts? My tranny mounts are really new, can I just reuse them?
Thanks!

Trannies are all the same, though on the the early cars (or maybe just the 83's?) the mounts are different IIRC.

So you get *slightly* slower acceleration for a stronger gear box AND LSD! That's more than a fair trade-off.

I think it would be a great idea if the mounts bolt straight up. The S2 has a very slightly higher first gear, probably not enough to notice, but 5th is actually lower than the US early (pre-1988) 944NA's.

The usual problems come from trying to use an older (pre-85.5) tranny in a later car, because the early trannies don't have a speedo sender. Not a problem in your case.

yes, earlier models have the speed sensor at the wheel so it looks like the s2 tranny will bolt right in, still waiting for the verdict to whether I need a tranny but if I do looks like the s2 one is going in. Thanks everyone!! I'll keep you updated on the status.

but I've never seen the S2 pinion been called 'weak'...the S maybe

btw...I just measured the shaft on an early transaxle at around 4" long and the late at around 5 1/2" long...but I hear these transaxle are interchangable (late into early only)...those couplers must have a lot of space in them

the shift linkage lengths appear different too...but that's easily swapped

is this right?
