Just remove the 6 bolts that connect the header to the exhaust, loosen the head studs, and remove the head with the headers still attached. If you try to take out the studs from the head, odds are that one or more will break off.

Anyone ever have a srdii radius valve job done? My tfs heads on the race car as well as the head on my big midget motor (built by speedway engine development owner, they build the chevy IRL motors) have had the seats radiused instead of an angular valve job.

I see a lot of posts about head removal being such a bitch, but most people pull the head without the headers attached. This is much easier folks!

Great tip Brian!! <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" />

Perry, should we tell nickhance that 4 of the bolts can be removed in your sleep but the other two require several swivel extensions (broke at least two so far) and that they are a PAIN to get to? Still the path of least resistance.

Tip: Spray the bolts with oil several hours before you remove them. Better yet, get a muffler shop to remove only these two bolts while the car is still running.

nah, the head is already out and ready to go, the headers are disconnected, but the studs are still in the head.

Should I remove the studs before taking the head to get serviced?

Looking at the title, I am thinking don't we all need it every once in a while? Of course we are talking about when the timing belt breaks right? Shave the head will give you more compression and power while you have that thing at the machine shop. If I buy the car tomorrow, I will be doing a head replacement too.....

Unless they need to be replaced for a reason, leave them in. Chances are that you will snap at least one off if you try and pull them.
