Post Parking/Running Light Electrical Problems

Could someone please tell me if the parking light switch is independent or integrated into the headlight on my 1984 n/a 944? Or to really understand this, can someone tell me if there is a difference in function between parking and running lights. I think of a conventional Chevy.....pull the headlight switch half way, get the running lights. Is the 944 equipped with true "parking lights" for European style parking. If so, are these the side markers??

I see that the schematic call this out graphically external to the headlight switch, but I questtion where the switch is locayted within the vehicle if it is truly external, and controls the function of true parking lights.

I have other problems to track down. Right now, if I jump 12v to the headlight switch (with switch removed) to the gray/red or gray/black conductors corresponding to the parking lights, the parking lights don't come on, but a relay energizes, and the gauge lights come on. Fuses are good. I know that there was electrical related smoke the other night comming up from under the driver side headlight area, but have yet to find any burnt wires. I opened part of the main wiring harness (previously opened by someone during the 944s life) and have found severed and water logged red/green, red/blue wire repairs that have gone bad. No wonder I was getting low voltage readings to the headlite motor, (my original problem before latest smoke).

I also found a heavier conductor GRAY/RED severed in this "large" harness leading to the front drivers side area, but not burnt. If anyone could tell me what function this one provides, I would appreciate it.

I checked the gray wire behind the headlight switch for 12v with the ignition on, and came up with 0 volts.

I would also like to know what harnesses contain the parking/running light wiring, and at what points in the vehicle, conductors are daisy chained. Or clarification if the parking/running lights are fed front and back from the fuse block.

I have enough knowledge to design and install new wiring to do all of this, but I would rather restore the original wiring if possible. I just need a mix of lighting function and a few bits of detailed info to make the best use of my limited time to debug this system.

Thanks again,

Mike and Jon

I believe if you push the turn signal lever either direction the euro-style parking lights come on. Can't recall exactly though..

The front parking lights are 16 gauge (1.0 mm^2) wires; left is grey/black, right is grey/red. The light switch is the same as your Chevy; turn on the switch half way and the parking lights should come on. Sounds like these wires have been cut/damaged in your front harness. Other than that, your system sounds about normal. (What's that quote? "Other than that, how did you enjoy the play, Mrs. Lincoln?")

I am not really familiar with the early wiring diagrams, but it looks like the left and right front parking lights get their power from terminals A9 and C7 respectively on the fuse block. Front side marker lights are daisy chained off them. Rear running lights are taken off terminals F9 and F15 of the fuse block, with the rear side markers daisy chained off of them. To check out the wiring harness, I guess you could check for 12 V at these terminals when the lights are on.

Best of luck. Let us know what happens. <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" />

Behing the drivers side headlamp bucket is a bundle of "brown" wires to a chassis ground- make sure to clean these, and the ground metal and reassemble. My headlight (left) and front"driving" lights would flicker, and Iwould get weak voltage across the relay until I did this and checked my grounds..
and GET the 12V or better it takes to run the electrical stuff properly.

BTW Sid-I wake up to the mantra..check your grounds..check your grounds..

Hello guys.

I am having an issue similar to this. I currently have NO POWER to any RUNNING LIGHT FUSES in the fuse block. I believe I have a short somewhere and am trying to understand the way these are wired.

I have no power to the Running light fuses so my first guess was the LIGHT SWITCH. I replaced this but to no avail...nothing happened.

Next question is WHich RELAY get's power to it when the running lights are turned on? I want to try replacing this and see if it works.

Where else would one look for a short? I had my car painted and I had all lights off of the car. I assembled the car and they worked at first. Then I believe when the car was on a charger they stopped working.

Thank you!!
