Default Fuel Leaking

My 1989 Turbo has a fuel leak. Only 66k miles. I noticed the leak after looking at the gas guage on empty, filling it up 1/4 tank and then looking under car to see a fast steady drip. It is comming from the tank area. What could it be the fuel pump, hoses, tank....all of the above? Is this area easy to get to without a lift? Where should I start? Any and all posts are greatly appreciated.

You have three hoses back there. It could be 1, 10 or 17 if it's a hose. Part numbers are as follows.

10 = 951 356 061 02
17 = 951 356 041 03
1 = 951 356 047 00

This applies to all late 944 8valve cars, including the turbo.

Mine was leaking at the pump itself. Have to drop the strap, a few bolts, and the pump cover comes off. Look around the crimps on the pump housing as this style Bosch pump I have seen leak on other European cars as well.

my fuel pump leaked as well.
it looked like it was leaking from the fitting coming out of the pump, but it was actually leaking from the crimped area on the pump.
tried epoxy, didn't work.
had to buy a new pump.
i also replaced the soft lines, and check valve while i was back there.

I walked out to my garage this morning to find a puddle of fuel below my gas tank...grimm!

I took a quick look at the tank and only the lower say 3" of the tank were saturated in fuel (this is were the strap runs around the tank parallel to the ground).

In all of your infinite wisdom, would any of these hoses cause the fuel to drip onto the tank and not saturate the whole upper portion of the tank? At least not the side that can be seen from the rear of the car.

**Car has undergone major surgery the last 1.5 years and has been driven for 1 week in the fall 2011, and this week. It had max 1/4 tank of fuel that whole time...until I put 10 gallons in yesterday**

My advice, don't park the car in your garage until you have the leak fixed. I've seen too many house fires caused by a leak from a car.

Could be a hole in the tank itself. I have seen that a few times. Will leak out until the level in the tank is below the hole, or you go around a corner hard.

Thanks everyone. Today I was informed that the cover on the bottom most area of the tank is in fact a cover for the fuel pump! This is really good news I believe.

The fuel has soaked the bottom of the tank only from where the cover meets the tank and lower making me pretty sure that when i pull it off, it will be one of 3 items:

-Fuel pump leaking
-Feed line to fuel pump
-Fuel pump line to Fuel filter

I shall pull it tonight and see but I was REALLY not excited about dropping the trans and fuel tank to fix a leak. That just was not making my happy...
