OT: Saw 2 real 959s today...what the hell are they doing there?!
Okay...I was in Los Angeles this past day, visiting my friend at UCLA...we cruised down Wilshire Blvd...checked out Symbolic Motors (as seen in Gone in 60 Seconds)...they had some nice Z8s, 360 Modenas, Diablos, Bentleys, Lotuses, etc. So, we cruised down Wilshire a little more...and I saw sitting in the window, at least $5,000,000 in cars...all covered with dust. There were 2 959s (REAL 959s, silver and white), 2 XJ220s (green and silver), 1 Bugatti EB110 (baby blue), 1 BMW M1 (white), 2 Diablo GTs (orange), 1 Diablo GT (Le Mans car orange), 4 normal Diablos...all were just sitting there in an empty room...it looked like it was a showroom at one time, but they are either abandoning the location or remodeling, couldn't quite tell yet. Though, the cars were dirty as all hell. They had a nice coating of dust on every single one.
Does anyone know anything about this place? It is located just down the street from Symbolic on Wilshire Blvd...

Visited last summer P-factory in Zuffenhausen.Went also to Porsche Kunndenzentrum to buy some parts for my 951.When you go to the store you go through the service departments parking lot. There were 11 959's waiting for service...

My mechanic owns a 959 and a POS Ferrari. Not to mention a 356, 993RS, older RS (not sure of the specific model), 928S4, and enough parts to build a few Porsches.
What's the big deal with 959's? He let me drive it around the neighborhood a while back. I wasn't too impressed.

Well, it was great 16 years ago! There was a comparison in Excellence around Sears Point a while back comparing all the various generations of 911 Turbos (stock & modified) against the 959. They pretty much all spanked the 959 except for the 930 and 964 Turbos.

Michael Michael Michael... So young... Jk.
Really though, do you think it was a REAL 959 that your mechanic has? With their price over half a mil going in auctions... I don't know of any mechanic that could afford one. But maybe he's a rich German wrench.
I would venture to say that if someone got to drive a REAL 959 that they would have a different response? The '98 911 Turbo S was essentially a street legal 959, and I think if I drove one of those I would wet my pants.

Actually, the 959's are going for half of what matt mentioned above. And yes, they are certified "real" by whoever does that sort of thing here.
Mike wasn't impressed because he rode in a 996 turbo the other day at the PCA race.

Oh.
Sorry, the last 959 info I looked at said 500 big ones. I usually don't stay up on the 959 prices since I'm not exactly in the market.

No no no, my friend the 98 Turbo S and the 959 are no where near the same car. Yes they do have some similaritities, but the 959 was a mid engined car. Sure they both have crazy hp, and AWD but they are very different. There was actually a test in Excellence not to long ago that talks about how the 959 is not a quick as the last two generations of twin turbos. But give the 959 credit where it is due the car is over 10 years older than those cars and will still give them a good run. 959's are 1/2 million dollar car because they are exclusive. But for my money I'm taking an F40, came out around the same time and were always compared with eachother, and I will go againset the porsche crowd and say ferrari all the way on that one.

Of course an 87 and 98 are going to be different. I wasn't at all referring to mechanics. I was referring to speed, in that if you can never drive a 959 but can a 98 911 Turbo S the feel is the same (or so I'm told). A 3.4 second Porsche is a 3.4 sec Porsche. That's all I was getting at. Not to mention about 3 or 4 P-books I have read have said the same thing - that is, performance wise the 959 and the 98 911 Turbo S are very similar.

Back in the late 80's some rich guy totaled one of the first 959s on the autobahn (A6?) near Hamburg - it made the evening news in Bremen where I lived at the time!

Ian - the 959 is not mid-engined. Its a rear motor just like the 911s. But yes it does have 4wd and is completely different from contemporary 911s.
Kierf - I saw a white 959 sport model up on a lift at Andial (Costa Mesa, CA) a few days ago. Those babies are incredibly complicated underneath! They are actually painted yellow underneath in many different spots including the suspension members - maybe this is a factory one off coloring used for race-cars or 959s.
All others - Dieter (Owner of Andial) said the 959s were still going for $500,000 when I asked.
