Gear lever is not returning to the 3-4 gate
After 4 months of hibernation my ’88 924S has emerged from the garage and it has acquired an annoying problem. The 5-speed gear lever is no longer “spring-loaded” to return to the 3rd – 4th gate position. Gears can be selected with no problem, but it requires a very deliberate motion and the 5 to 4 shift is most exciting when you’re trying to avoid choosing 2nd by mistake. The gear lever motion also feels a little “gummy”. Is it possible this is a simple linkage issue? I’m running Redline MTL (changed last October) in the transaxle.
Thanks for the help.

I am by no means a mechanic, but I have heard of the spring inside there wearing out. Sorry, thats as far as my knowledge goes on this matter. <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

i think i know what you mean. my 84 944 has somewhat the same problem, as does my buddies 87 951. in my car, my gear lever moves right to left for a bit, but i still have to push it more either way to go to the 1-2 gate and the 5-R gate. in the 951, the gear lever moves forward and aft, and the lever moves right left much like mine. both transmissions are still fully shiftable, and we have no problem finding the gears. i beleive that worn shift bushings cause this, i'm not sure about your car, it just happened when you stored it?... i think that the bushings are self-lubricating, but this summer i'm going to look into having mine replaced. i'll be watching the thread to see whats going on. happy fixin!
