Default Drag Racing 944's

Have any of you boys taken out your 944 Turbo to Martin Dragway in Michigan (AKA Martin)? I saw a few 944's there last year.

The sound of crickets in this thread has been overwhelmed by the sounds of CV's and ring & pinions breaking catastrophically.

Have fun, and remember, it's not if but WHEN will yours meet the same demise as many other drag racer 951 transaxles. Cryo'ed gears only do $o much...

But don't take it from me...

Just gotta roll out of the hole and not drop the clutch.

I've done plenty of low speed "roll races/brake boosting" and no issues. So it is all just on that clutch drop and hard launch where the problems happen. Actually, with such crappy 60ft times even with a hard launch, it is almost not worth it to drop the clutch and go. Just ease out of the beams and then hit it. lol

I've finally got the clutch feathering down to drag launch my 948 NA tranny in 2nd gear without spinning the 285 rears too much and I have not broken an axle yet. I would be afraid to drop the clutch too hard and get perfect grip tho. I'm happy, I've burned a C5 and a local 928 at the light so I can't complain.

Has anybody cryoed the Turbo 3.375 R&P and went drag racing?
Also what about the rear squat under high torque. Do the off-the-line guys add coilovers and leave the rear T-bars? if so what size springs with the T-bars left in? I wonder if I can get a better launch/less squat with helper coilovers......

Been there done that, I blew out a few transaxles and 4-5 CV's. Thats why I have 8 spare CV's in the garage as well as 2 spare transaxles. Its all about having fun.

Get a solid mount for the transaxles or make your's urethane filled. Trust me it makes a difference. The rear squat I would just lower it a bit and then try and stiffen up the rear suspension, but remember this is independent suspension for a reason handling. If you want a solid axle get a mustang.

5500 rpm, slicks, drop the clutch! If it's an S2 or a Turbo with an lsd box u don't have to worry much

These tranny's can handle alot of abuse!

Did I mention I haven't busted an axle yet?......
This one allows no side to side torque slap that busts the CV's.....

WOW the squat on that 944 was wild in the photos! With my limited slip differential I was able to get a 2.1s 60ft, with the open differential transaxle installed I could only manage a 2.4s 60ft.

Well I live about 10 miles from Martin, and have had my NA out there (no real sense in dragging, I know its slow). Just let it look pretty in the pits during test 'n tune of our Monte Carlo.

The purists would hate me.... but my dad and I have been toying with the idea of putting the body of my '88 parts car over a tube frame/ M II front end/ 9" rear end with a stout 383 and powerglide. It would make a very nice light drag car. It would be a 3-4 year project, but I bet with about 550hp and good traction it'd be one sonofabitch of a drag car.

That mount looks awesome. Does it affect handling or anything? I wish we had the early style mounts with one on each side those kept the tranny in place and were easier to change.

I have an old magainze that showed a guy that did very similar and it got down into the 9's. The 944 was actually on the cover of the magazine. I'll see if I can find it.

Any more rolling kills? You gotta run those Vettes again so they know it wasn't a fluke.

Yeah, it keeps the trans from sloshing back and forth with that $hitty factory mount. Even if your pour poly in a factory mount you can still push it sideways by hand and the overextension in the ball/pockets is what kills the CV cages/races under high torque ..... and I did design a 2-piece set for the early cars...nuke proof too...
