Post Just when you think it is the CV joints....

it isn't! I had bought all the supplies and new tools and as I was cleaning the 12 point bolts I looked at my now rusting exhaust system. The whole system was shifted to the left and rubbing on the bottom of the car. It also was rubbing on part of the transmission(or axel I forgot). the clicking and thumping sound was made when I moved the exhaust system. I believe that the rubber hangers caused the exhaust to oscilate when the car is accelerating or braking and bang on the bottom of my car. so the question is should I do the CV joints any way? (136000 miles)

No. Don't fix what isn't broken. Of course, do fix your exhaust hangers. And, um, sell me your CV joint kit for cheap? Just teasing. I've done one joint myself and it wasn't that bad. Threads on this list as well as the infamous Hayne's manual made the job pretty simple. But, I wouldn't suggest doing it if the joints aren't already clicking.

Have fun!

Actually, why not at least check 'em and stuff some more grease in there? No doubt it would need it. If they are indeed that old and have never been replaced they are probably hurting for some lubrication. You could take 'em out, stuff some grease in there and put them back in in just an hour or so.

Once you take them off, clean them a little you most likely will find some wear.

Nothing like new CV's and boots!

Oh yeah! I totally agree with that. Sorry I didn't mention that the first time. As long as they're well greased you've got no problem.

Have fun!

Go ahead and replace the CV joints. 136,000 is a lot of miles on the CV joints if they haven't been replaced. Return the parts if you don't want to replace the CV joints now.

But don't leave the parts laying around. The fact is you're driving a 16 year old car. If you keep the parts waiting for the CV joints to wear out completely, you may decide to sell the car (or something may happen that is too expensive to repair) and you'll be left with a nice set of new parts you can't use. Use the parts while you have the car.

I believe that the cv joints have not been turned around because the 12 point bolts are still in there. I will get to those CV's before the winter is out.
