Does anyon know if the vapour purge system was a US thing, or if us europeans had it aswell?

Then yes.
Mine is euro spec and has it.

Under the left front fender.
Open the hood and look inside left side of the engine room just in front of the fuse / relay box against the fire wall.
If you find a piece of (mostly kinda corroded) galvanised sheet metal with some parts mounted to it, geniously blocking the aproach to the diagnostics plug, you have the vapour system.
The can is in the left front fender, connected to the rest of the system by some 12 mm black armoured hoses.

Dont worry: you MUST have it, Sweden was one of the first countries in Europe pressing for this kind of stuff.
